Caution: Don't bury your qualifications under prepositions!<\/p>\n

From my base in the Middle East, I work with many applicants throughout Asia who have excellent English but use a few phrases in ways that depart from the strictly correct. Here are some tips to help applicants improve their use of two words that are commonly misused.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Leverage\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rule: Do not use a preposition with the word \"leverage.\" <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Leverage\" is most often used to indicate that you made use of one thing to obtain another. Most applicants understand what leverage is; the mistake only comes in how they phrase it. The correct way is without a preposition.<\/p>\n

Correct usage:<\/strong> I leveraged my knowledge of marketing to champion my idea throughout the department.<\/span><\/p>\n

Incorrect usage:<\/strong> My leverage on brand loyalty made me eager to pursue a job at Nike. <\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, you can leverage credibility, loyalty, knowledge, and even debt, but the key is to\u00a0<\/span>do it alone<\/span><\/i>, don\u2019t use a preposition (like the frequent error \"leverage on\").<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Comprise<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone knows this word, but for many people for whom English is a second language \u2013 even those who spent their entire lives studying in English in school \u2013 this term comes with another prepositional complication. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"Comprised\" can be used in two ways:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. \u00a0A team can be \"comprised of\" certain members.<\/span><\/p>\n

OR<\/span><\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Certain members can \"comprise\" the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every year many of my applicants mistakenly use the preposition \"of\" when it isn\u2019t needed and drop it when it is necessary. So remember, when team members comprise a team, they\u00a0<\/span>do it alone<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u2013 without a preposition. <\/span><\/p>\n

If you keep getting confused, maybe write those two sample sentences out on a sticky note to put on your computer screen. <\/span><\/p>\n

These words come up all the time, especially in <\/span>leadership<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and teamwork\u00a0<\/span>MBA admission essays<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
