Learn the answers to these questions and more in our roundup of top business school news.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The joy of MBA rankings<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span>As part of its latest MBA rankings,<\/span><i><span> Forbes<\/span><\/i><span> analyzed the happiness factor: At which business schools are students the most joyous? According to their survey of more than 1,000 alumni, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.darden.virginia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>University of Virginia\u2019s Darden School of Business<\/span><\/a><span> is at the top of the list. Placing second was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuck.dartmouth.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Dartmouth College\u2019s Tuck School of Business<\/span><\/a><span>. So, what exactly makes students happy? Is it the alumni network that helps graduates get jobs? High starting salaries? Friendly classmates? Read on to find out what factors into this ranking (it\u2019s actually somewhat arbitrary). (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kurtbadenhausen\/2015\/12\/03\/business-schools-with-the-most-satisfied-mba-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span>Forbes<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Specialized degrees booming<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span>That collective bang you hear is the explosion in specialized programs at mid-tier business schools across the United States\u2014and this boom isn\u2019t localized to traditional areas, like finance and real estate. Business schools have tailored new programs to meet the demands of a changing job market, including sectors in which Big Data plays an increasingly crucial part. Here\u2019s how the dean at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.owen.vanderbilt.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Vanderbilt\u2019s Owen Graduate School of Management<\/span><\/a><span> describes the trend: \u201cWe don\u2019t see these programs as sort of \u2018MBA-lite.\u2019 They really are much closer to undergraduate programs on steroids.\u201d The benefit of these programs is that they can get you a job really fast. The downside is that the pay isn\u2019t quite as good as your traditional, non-specialized MBA degree. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/poetsandquants.com\/2015\/12\/04\/rise-b-school-specialized-masters-program\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Poets &amp; Quants<\/span><\/a><span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The best business schools in Europe<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><i><span>The Financial Times<\/span><\/i><span> has published this year\u2019s rankings of the best business schools in Europe. Leading the pack is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.london.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>London Business School<\/span><\/a><span>. Placing second is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insead.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>INSEAD<\/span><\/a><span>, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hec.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>HEC Paris<\/span><\/a><span> coming in third. \u201cMBA programs and the ability to offer companies custom training that responds promptly to their needs are keys to a school of management,\u201d said Bruno Busacca, dean of Italy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdabocconi.it\/en\/node\" target=\"_blank\"><span>SDA Bocconi<\/span><\/a><span>, which also placed highly on the MBA rankings list. INSEAD has bragging rights for the highest salary; its graduates accept starting compensation averaging $155K. Graduates of Spain\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ie.edu\/business-school\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>IE Business School<\/span><\/a><span> are nipping at their heels, though, with an average starting pay of $152,000, a tremendous 104% increase over pre-MBA salary. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessbecause.com\/news\/mba-rankings\/3641\/lbs-leads-uk-gains-in-ranking-of-top-euro-business-schools\" target=\"_blank\"><span>BusinessBecause<\/span><\/a><span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Build your online brand<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span>Your GMAT score, your essays, your interview: These are traditionally the most important factors that will help distinguish you in the business school admissions process. Increasingly, however, your social media profile is a wildcard component\u2014something that can potentially help get you in or keep you out. You may want to check your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter presence to ensure that what you broadcast tells the narrative you\u2019d want business school admissions officers to hear. There\u2019s no guarantee they are looking at your digital footprint, but if they do, you\u2019ll want to make a good impression. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/education\/blogs\/mba-admissions-strictly-business\/2015\/12\/04\/develop-a-smart-social-media-strategy-for-business-school-applications?int=9dc208\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span>U.S. News &amp; World Report<\/span><\/i><\/a><span>)<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>International favorites<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span>On top of the average GPA and GMAT score of the incoming class, one noteworthy piece of data that business schools publish is the percentage of their students who come from outside the United States. Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin American\u2014American MBA programs are true melting pots. But do applicants who hail from one part of the world have an advantage over those who are from another? One analysis shows that Middle Eastern applicants may have an edge.
