It\u2019s January. The holidays are over, people are working on (or already breaking) their new year\u2019s resolutions\u2026 and it\u2019s time to file the <\/span>FAFSA<\/span><\/a>. Here are a few must-know facts and tips:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 The FAFSA is the first step towards qualifying for federal and state financial aid (grants, student loans, work study, etc). Many universities also require that you file it in order to determine your eligibility for their own internal financial aid (scholarships, grants, etc). <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 You must file a FAFSA each year, with current financial information. Have your tax information ready.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 In order to qualify for federal aid, you must be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen. Certain <\/span>other restrictions<\/span><\/a> apply. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 If you\u2019re an international student<\/a>\u2014and not FAFSA eligible\u2014your university\u2019s financial aid office may have a financial statement you can submit in order to establish your financial need.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Both undergraduates and graduate students should file the FAFSA. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 If you\u2019re an undergrad, you will most likely need to provide your family\u2019s financial information. But graduate and professional students are most often considered \u201cindependent\u201d for financial aid purposes. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Know your deadlines! The application is available each January at fafsa.ed.gov<\/a>. The FAFSA deadline is in June, but states have individual deadlines as early as February and March. Also be sure that you check the deadlines posted by your university or any scholarship programs you\u2019re applying for\u2014some of them have early deadlines!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Many private scholarship programs require the FAFSA as a way to establish your financial aid eligibility. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Don\u2019t assume that you will not qualify for aid!<\/b> The only way to access federal student aid\u2014including federal student loans\u2014 is with this application.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 The FAFSA is a free application. There are some services that will charge you for assistance with the form, but it\u2019s a straightforward process that you can complete yourself for free. The Department of Ed has a <\/span>guide<\/span><\/a> to help you.<\/span><\/p>\n
