This week, Jennifer continues her discussion of how to solve Data Sufficiency problems using the Kaplan Method.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Today we will continue to deconstruct the following Data Sufficiency (DS) question taken from the GMAT:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><span>What is the area of square <\/span><i><span>ABCD<\/span><\/i><span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>(1) The longest line segment that can be drawn through any two points on the perimeter of square <\/span><i><span>ABCD<\/span><\/i><span> is 4\u221a2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>(2) When a circle is inscribed in square <\/span><i><span>ABCD<\/span><\/i><span>, the longest line segment connecting two points on the circumference of the circle that can be drawn has a length of 4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><span>As you\u2019ll recall from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/business-school-insider\/2016\/01\/26\/land-your-score-data-sufficiency-problems-part-1\/\"><span>my previous post<\/span><\/a><span>, we determined that Statement (1) is sufficient by evaluating it using the Kaplan Method.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>The Kaplan Method for Data Sufficiency<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 1.<\/b><span> Analyze the question stem. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Determine whether it\u2019s a Value or Yes\/No question. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Simplify. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Identify what is needed to answer the question. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Step 2. <\/b><span>Evaluate the statements using 12TEN. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><b>Using 12TEN to your advantage<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>As a reminder, Data Sufficiency answer choices never change on the GMAT. Instead of thinking of them by standard multiple choice letter designations, we at Kaplan use a more intuitive method.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>1: Statement (1) <\/b><span>BY ITSELF is sufficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2: Statement (2) <\/b><span>BY ITSELF is sufficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>T:<\/b> <b>Together <\/b><span>Statements (1) and (2) provide sufficiency (but BY ITSELF, neither does).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>E: Either<\/b><span> statement BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>N: Neither<\/b><span> statement is sufficient, either BY ITSELF or TOGETHER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Because we determined that Statement (1) is sufficient, we keep 1 as a possible answer choice. And here is where remembering 12TEN comes in super handy: If (1) by itself is sufficient, we will not try them together. <\/span><i><span>Together<\/span><\/i><span> is not an option if one or both of the statements are sufficient. We also know that N cannot be the answer, because at minimum Statement (1) is sufficient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>What might be hard to spot at first is that we can also eliminate 2 as an answer choice. Because Statement (1) is sufficient, 2 <\/span><i><span>cannot<\/span><\/i><span> be the answer; if Statement (2) turns out to be sufficient, the answer is Either (E).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>So, here we keep 1 and E<\/span><b>,<\/b><span> but we can eliminate 2, T, and N. Our answer choices look like this: <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>1<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><del><span>2<\/span><\/del><span><br \/>\n<\/span><del><span>T<\/span><span><br \/>\n<\/span><\/del><span>E<\/span><del><span><br \/>\n<\/span><span>N<\/span><\/del><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Now we are ready to look at Statement (2) BY ITSELF.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Drawing the figure<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Statement (2) tells us, \u201cWhen a circle is inscribed in square <\/span><i><span>ABCD<\/span><\/i><span>, the longest line segment connecting two points on the circumference of the circle that can be drawn has a length of 4.\u201d To understand what this means, we need to draw the figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/business-school-insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/02\/kaplan-shape-problem.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5888 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kaptest.com\/blog\/business-school-insider\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/15\/2016\/02\/kaplan-shape-problem-300x265.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>The longest line that can be drawn between two points on a circle is the diameter; I\u2019ve drawn it in red. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><b>Is there sufficient data?<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>Statement (2) tells us that the diameter of this circle is 4. What line segment is the same length as the diameter of the circle? The side of the square. And because the question stem asks for the area of the square, all we would need is the length of a side of the square to find the value. Therefore, Statement (2) is also sufficient. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>It may seem odd to strike (1) from the remaining answer choices, since the statement <\/span><i><span>is<\/span><\/i><span> sufficient, but that is exactly what we do now. Because EITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient to answer the question, E is the correct answer.
