Cindy joined Accepted in 1998, after working as a writer and editor. She specializes in MBA and EMBA admissions. Welcome, Jen and Cindy!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What makes a good EMBA applicant?<\/strong>\u00a0[2:10]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> Someone who has a lens on their industry and experience\u2014something that makes them memorable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> Candidates who would contribute to the learning environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How are the criteria different for EMBA programs (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2015\/07\/24\/mba-admissions-decisions-should-you-go-full-time-or-part-time-2\/\">vs full-time MBA programs<\/a>)?<\/strong>\u00a0[3:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since EMBA programs attract applicants with more work experience (10-15 years vs 4-5 years for MBA), there\u2019s more of an emphasis on your professional experience. Academics and GMAT are still important to show academic readiness, but aren\u2019t as crucial. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full-time programs have more of a focus on the applicant\u2019s recruiting potential (whether candidates can be placed upon graduation). But EMBA students won\u2019t generally be relying on the program to place them on graduation. They are employed and expect to remain so while going to school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>It\u2019s important for EMBA applicants to show management experience<\/strong>\u00a0[5:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Career services and EMBA students<\/strong>\u00a0[6:30]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, most programs didn\u2019t provide EMBA students with access to career services. Now most programs offer something\u2014such as a career assessment or access to the \u201cresume book\u201d for recruiters. But not on-campus recruitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What do they wish EMBA applicants knew?<\/strong>\u00a0[8:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> trying to hide <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2015\/01\/06\/mba-interviews-tell-me-about-your-weaknesses\/\">weaknesses<\/a> in a profile doesn\u2019t work. Somebody\u2019s going to notice. It\u2019s better to address it rather than be in a defensive position later on. This is why Cornell asks whether your academic record is an accurate reflection of your ability. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> Being able to self-critique shows strength. Also: if you\u2019re changing careers, you need to be able to show how that will happen \u2013 present a plan. \u00a0And take into account relationships with your company, particularly if they\u2019re supporting you with time off. And most of all, make it interesting. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What makes an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2015\/12\/10\/3-tips-for-writing-a-winning-emba-essay\/\">application great<\/a>?<\/strong>\u00a0[13:35]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> Confidence. Assuming that someone is already qualified \u2013 what sets an application apart is the ability to tell lively stories, write well, show the ability to prioritize, make decisions, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> I want to see who the person is, beyond their career progression \u2013 beyond the resume and transcript. Show something of yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The point of anecdotes: not just what you did or experienced, but what you got out of it\/learned from it. Your perspective on those events.<\/strong>\u00a0[17:00]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How to distill lots of experience into a short essay<\/strong>\u00a0[18:00]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> Relate experiences to courses they\u2019ll be taking \u2013 how those experiences will elevate the overall learning environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> Remember that everything you write about requires a strategic decision. What will support your application and portray you effectively? Think about experiences that show your executive level experience and skills \u2013 making decisions, managing people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shorter the essay, the more time you should spend sifting experiences to find the best one(s).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How does working while in school affect the evaluation process?<\/strong>\u00a0[20:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> the significance of the current position is even greater, because it\u2019s what you\u2019ll bring to the table, and you\u2019ll take new skills back to work. It depends on the question, but you can usually talk about your current job in the goals essay. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> How will you <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2015\/09\/07\/emba-applicants-4-immediate-action-items\/\">fit this into your life<\/a>? Some schools ask directly about balancing school, work, and life. Show that you have realistic expectations for balancing EMBA program with work and life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Interview tips<\/strong>\u00a0[25:45]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> EMBA interviews tend to be a conversation \u2013 no gotcha questions. They\u2019re interested in your experience, background, goals, why their program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> Schools have different formats, but most EMBA interviews are not blind (the interviewer has read your application).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/where-you-should-apply\">Why MBA\/EMBA<\/a>?\u00a0<\/strong>[28:00]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schools want applicants who are pursuing the degree for the right reasons \u2013 career goals that make sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Importance of goals in the EMBA process<\/strong>\u00a0[29:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goals start right where you are, since you\u2019ll start to apply your learning while still in the program. Identify concrete goals \u2013 positions, what you want to achieve, your contributions, your motives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Parting advice for EMBA applicants<\/strong>\u00a0[31:55]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cindy:<\/strong> There\u2019s great diversity in the EMBA realm \u2013 different strengths and formats \u2013 so do your research and find the right fit. Up-front research is vital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Jen:<\/strong> If you have the chance to visit, do. Meet students, sit in on classes, even meet with admissions representatives.
