Get need-to-know EMBA basics down with these important tips.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The changes in the EMBA applicant\/student profile that we explored in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2016\/02\/09\/the-expanded-executive-mba-profile\/\">previous post<\/a> are accompanied by new trends in the EMBA world.\u00a0Now we will examine two of these trends: changes in sponsorship and GMAT requirements.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b><br \/>\n<\/b><strong>Changing company sponsorship requirements\/expectations<\/strong><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EMBA applicants' employers often sponsor their EMBA studies, at least to some extent. This sponsorship ranges from paying 100% of the tuition (rare) to simply accommodating the applicant\u2019s need to take time off from work (almost universal). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sponsorship picture has certainly changed over the last decade. According to the Executive MBA Council\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emba.org\/research_prog_results.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recent research survey results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the percentage of self-funded EMBA students has grown to almost 40% by 2014. \u00a0It was 32% in 2005-2006, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emba.org\/pdf\/pressroom\/2006_research_results_11_18.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Council\u2019s 2006 Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0That same 2006 survey shows that 40% of organizations fully funded EMBA students in 2003 and 35% in 2005-2005. \u00a0Now, per the 2014 survey, that percentage has dropped to about 25% in 2014.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtually all EMBA programs take sponsorship seriously and typically require that the employer provide a statement of support for the applicant's EMBA plans. Here are some samples of EMBA sponsorship expectations:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/executivemba.wharton.upenn.edu\/admissions\/application-process\/sponsorship-requirements\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wharton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \"<\/span><strong>For most applicants, proposing and receiving sponsorship is a crucial part of the application process<\/strong><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While employer endorsement is a requirement for admission, financial sponsorship is at the discretion of the student\u2019s organization ... All applicants require the basic level of sponsorship, which is the acknowledgement of time to participate in the program.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fuqua.duke.edu\/programs\/duke_mba\/global-executive\/admissions\/application-instructions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duke (Global Executive)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u00a0\"<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A letter from your current employer outlining your company's support of time is required. This letter may also include information about your employer's financial commitment, but financial sponsorship is not required. Proprietors or principals of a company can provide a letter of self-sponsorship.\u201d \u00a0(The webpage also provides a link to a sample letter.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/emba.mit.edu\/for-sponsors\/faq-for-sponsors\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MIT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201c\u2026We consider corporate sponsorship of the time requirement to be critical. In your application package, one of your recommenders should be from your boss, and address the topic of time sponsorship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellogg.northwestern.edu\/programs\/executive-mba\/applying-to-kellogg\/application-requirements.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kellogg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Your organization is required to supply a letter stating that it supports and approves the time required for you to attend the Executive MBA Program. If your organization is providing financial sponsorship, please state that in the letter as well. (However, you are not required to have financial sponsorship.)\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial sponsorship can still be a competitive plus for applicants, because it underscores your value and high potential in the organization\u2019s eyes. \u00a0But not having it is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a negative factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re an entrepreneur, you basically sponsor yourself \u2013 therefore you must indicate how you\u2019ll accommodate the time requirements within the context of your own organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It happens too that sometimes regularly employed applicants who are eligible for financial sponsorship may prefer to self-fund, because they do not want to be beholden to their organization but instead be free to pursue other options. Indeed, having time sponsored can create an obligation on the applicant\u2019 part. \u00a0If that\u2019s not desired, EMBA programs (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www8.gsb.columbia.edu\/programs\/executive-mba\/options-locations\/emba-ny\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia University\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that offer a Saturday-only option may be the best option.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><strong><br \/>\nGMAT requirements<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More and more EMBA programs, including some of the highest ranked such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/NorthwesternKellogg.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kellogg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/emba.mit.edu\/admissions\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MIT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stern.nyu.edu\/programs-admissions\/executive-mba\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/CornellJohnson.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cornell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/MichiganRoss.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ross<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (University of Michigan), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/zones\/UCLAAnderson.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anderson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UCLA), do not require the GMAT (or GRE). \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And among those that do require the GMAT, it may be possible to obtain a GMAT waiver under certain circumstances.\u00a0For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobooth.edu\/programs\/exec-mba\/admissions\/application\/gmat\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at University of Chicago and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/goizueta.emory.edu\/degree\/emba\/admissions\/gmat_waivers.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goizueta at Emory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> require the GMAT generally but may grant waivers if you can present concrete evidence of sufficient quantitative and analytic capabilities and skills. \u00a0If you believe you\u2019re eligible, you must request the waiver proactively.
