And all three are currently first-year MBA students \u2013 Erin and Robin at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/uc-berkeley-haas\">Haas<\/a>, and Destin at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/university-of-texas-mccombs\">McCombs<\/a>. Welcome!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What is Consulting Interview Coach?<\/strong>\u00a0[1:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s an interview training service to prepare candidates for the case interview method. They also provide behavioral interview prep, resume and cover letter review. All three coaches have experience as recruiters and consultants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>How did they found this company?<\/strong>\u00a0[2:43]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destin and Erin started the company. They were thinking about ways to give back and help other candidates while also creating a venture during b-school. And they wanted something that would draw on their consulting skills. Robin joined the company this year \u2013 he had previously worked with candidates in Belgium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What are firms looking for?<\/strong>\u00a0[4:50]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The case interview screens for intellectual horsepower and problem solving skills \u2013 there\u2019s not always a right answer to the question. The other big point of the interview is identifying candidates\u2019 cultural fit with the firm. Some of that also comes across in a behavioral interview or in networking events. (And it\u2019s one reason why networking events are important \u2013 so that candidates can get a read on the firm\u2019s culture and understand whether it\u2019s a good fit.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Since \u201cculture\u201d can sound intangible, what are some ways to understand it?<\/strong>\u00a0[6:45]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The firm\u2019s work culture has to do with how consultants operate -- whether they take a more academic approach, more time doing research, etc, or spend more time in the field with the client, for example. Another aspect is the tone of the work interaction: competitive? Cooperative? Team-oriented? Networking events can help you get a feel for firm\u2019s corporate culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Their book: <\/strong><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>20 Days to Ace the Case<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[10:00]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a 20-day boot camp to prep for the case interview. (It also contains advice about consulting in general.) The book features industry insights, firm profiles, etc. It provides a structure for candidates. Their preparation strategy focuses on critical thinking, not memorization \u2013 the goal is to fit the framework to the case, not the case to the framework. They also provide profiles of successful candidates, networking tips, behavioral interview tips, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Does the book give cultural insight on firms?<\/strong>\u00a0[13:25]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lets consultants speak about their experiences. But networking is really the best way to learn a firm\u2019s culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin and Erin are first years at Haas. What\u2019s going well and has met\/exceeded expectations?<\/strong>\u00a0[14:22]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong> The professors are really accessible, the classmates are great, and the location is ideal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> The way the classes are taught (discussion more than lecture) allows for exciting exchange of perspectives. And the class is diverse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Anything they would change\/improve?<\/strong>\u00a0[17:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> Because Berkeley\u2019s a public university, it can be a little resource constrained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong> There can be some extra challenges for international students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Destin is a first-year student at McCombs. What\u2019s going well and has met\/exceeded expectations?<\/strong>\u00a0[19:00]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are great opportunities for experiential learning. Austin is a start-up hub, and there\u2019s great support from professors and the community for entrepreneurs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Anything he would change\/improve?<\/strong>\u00a0[20:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wishes the school would try to brand itself as an entrepreneurial school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Any surprises in b-school so far?<\/strong>\u00a0[21:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong>\u00a0The small size of the program at Haas makes it intimate and integrated. The profs are really approachable \u2013 it\u2019s a great opportunity to have drinks\/dinner with top scholars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Destin:<\/strong>\u00a0Working in consulting, the long hours didn\u2019t allow me to spend time on personal interests. So having time to explore opportunities is exciting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> Adapting to change is never easy \u2013 moving to a new part of the country and adapting to a new place and lifestyle is a process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Any unique challenges for <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2016\/01\/18\/international-student-loans-with-community-based-financing\/\">international MBAs<\/a>?<\/strong>\u00a0[24:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong> UC Berkeley has a great international office, providing help with visas, etc. But coming to the US as an international student is a long administrative process. And finding an internship without a green card is a little challenging, since many companies prefer candidates who have permanent residency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pre-MBA, Erin spent 4 months at Bodhi Surf School in Costa Rica, surfing and doing yoga.<\/strong>\u00a0[26:40]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She knew she wanted a break from consulting, pre-grad school, and this was the lifestyle change she\u2019d been looking for. The experience taught her about personally taking risks. Destin went as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Common pop culture misconceptions about consulting?<\/strong>\u00a0[30:30]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> The glamorous lifestyle. Most consultants aren\u2019t living it up in luxury hotels on the beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> The theme of tricking clients into paying more. In fact, the process is about solving problems together with the client.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>What mistakes do candidates make during recruiting?<\/strong>\u00a0[32:20]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong> Not being humble enough or friendly enough. Remember that the recruiters are looking for people they want to work with, not just the smartest people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> Not laying groundwork. The networking you do before the interview is important \u2013 building advocates in the firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Destin:<\/strong> Many candidates are afraid to practice live interviews. Doing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/services\/interviewpackage\">mock interviews<\/a> is vital \u2013 it helps you be more relaxed and natural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Advice for MBA applicants<\/strong>\u00a0[36:45]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> Self-reflection. You need to know exactly what you want to get out of the MBA process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Destin:<\/strong> Give the application process everything you have. Prepare for the GMAT\/GRE and get the best score you can; <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2014\/11\/12\/mba-interview-must-know-3-the-school\/\">research schools<\/a>. Put yourself in the best position for success. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Future plans post-MBA<\/strong>\u00a0[39:35]<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Robin:<\/strong> Plans to return to McKinsey<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Destin:<\/strong> Hopes to pursue entrepreneurship but may return to consulting<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Erin:<\/strong> Plans to return to consulting but in a new area: social impact.
