See the first post in our series <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2016\/04\/10\/narrowing-b-school-options\/\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is Jack?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some things you should know about our boy Jack\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Jack wants to go into R\/E development\/finance\u00a0and grow his family business. His family and his business are located on the East Coast, so Jack would prefer a b-school on the East Coast, close to home \u2013 though he would consider going west for the right program, or even overseas, given his long-term aim to expand globally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> He's considering the following schools: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/harvardhbs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/stanford\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/wharton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wharton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/university-of-chicago-booth-school-of-business\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chicago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/columbia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/nyu-stern\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYU<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/uc-berkeley-haas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Haas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/northwestern-kellogg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kellogg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/duke-fuqua\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/johnson-at-cornell-university\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cornell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Rochester,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/georgetown-mcdonough\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgetown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/unc-kenan-flagler\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/ucla-anderson\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UCLA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/usc-marshall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/zones\/bschools\/london-business-school\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each of these schools will both give him the strong overall management foundation he seeks and offer him some other relevant value. For example, some, such as Columbia, offer exceptional real estate development specializations; others, such as Kellogg, have strong resources for family businesses; yet others such as Harvard and NYU, provide stellar entrepreneurship programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3. Qualifications:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>\u2022 GMAT<\/strong>: 730, balanced<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u2022 GPA<\/strong>: 2.9 from Georgetown, class of 2012 (<\/span>immature freshman year; illness sophomore year<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; upward trend in last two years; dean\u2019s list as a senior)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>\u2022 Transcript<\/strong>: Majored in math; minored in Asian history; passed all three levels of CFA; took a few business classes (accounting, stats for business, finance) online and got straight A\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>\u2022 Work experience<\/strong>: Attended a financial analyst program for two years, and then joined family property management business (outside NYC) for two years; handled two eight-figure property acquisitions<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>\u2022 Extracurricular activities<\/strong>: Has coached his neighborhood Little League team for 7 years; started a monthly book club for at-risk sixth graders<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><strong>\u2022 B-school timeline<\/strong>: Wants to\u00a0apply in 2016, matriculate in 2017, and graduate as the class of 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where should Jack apply? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack had to accept some harsh realities in whittling his list of possible schools down. First, his <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/get_accepted_with_low_stats\">low GPA<\/a> (even with upward trend) plus solid \u2013 even admirable \u2013 but less than scintillating professional profile makes HBS and Stanford essentially out of reach; it\u2019s not really worth the effort to apply. He knows that some of the other schools on the list will still be stretches \u2013 but with a great application, reasonable ones, not beyond reach. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He will apply Round 1 to Columbia, NYU Stern, Wharton, and Duke \u2013 all except Duke (closer to on-par, though he\u2019ll still have to explain his GPA) will be stretches, but his real estate experience and goals will give him something distinctive to the table for each \u2013 how he works this into \u201cfit\u201d will vary depending on the school. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, all these schools will satisfy his desire to stay on the East Coast. If he's not accepted to any of these places, he'll widen his circle and try for Chicago, UNC, UCLA, and Georgetown in Round 2. Chicago would still be a stretch, but he can make the case that his finance background prepares him for the analytic rigor, while he would benefit from its Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship. The others would be on-pars or close to it \u2013 as even with a strong career and GMAT, he can never consider a competitive MBA program \u201con par\u201d with a &lt; 3.0 GPA. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He may substitute LBS for one of the last four \u2013 while it's nowhere close to home, he's attracted to the school's wide array of electives that happen to be a bull\u2019s eye for his interests: \u201cThe Family Business, a Guide for Owners, Managers, and Advisors,\u201d \u201cReal Estate Finance\u201d and \u201cManaging the Growing Business,\u201d just to name a few. Moreover, his company\u2019s global expansion plans will benefit from the truly global network he will gain by attending a truly global program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask questions. Get answers.
