It is very similar to the question posed two years ago, which I though was an excellent\u00a0question.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0HBS 2+2 applications will only be reviewed R3. There is no advantage to 2+2 applicants\u00a0applying in Round 1 or 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Unlike the last few years, there is no advice on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/Pages\/from-the-admissions-director.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Direct from the Director<\/a> blog giving insight into the question. The silence is probably because the current director, Dee Leopold, is leaving this position shortly, and the new director, Chad Losee \u00a0(HBS MBA 2013), will assume the director role in June. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0The deadlines are only slightly different\u00a0from last year. The Round 1 deadline is Sept. 7, 2016, just\u00a0two days earlier than\u00a0last year's Sept. 9 round 1 due date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What has stayed the same:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0The essay is required, unlike two years ago, and like last year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0There is NO word limit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">There is <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/application-process\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">one question<\/a> for the Class of 2019:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>There is no word limit for this question.\u00a0 We think you know what guidance we're going to give here. Don't overthink, overcraft and overwrite. Just answer the question in clear language that those of us who don't know your world can understand.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before you begin to write I have two suggestions for you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Review <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/Pages\/who-are-we-looking-for.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard's criteria for admission<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Watch the embedded video on the case method at HBS.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eA5R41F7d9Q?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I'd also like to quote one piece of\u00a0advice Dee offered for last year's question that\u00a0is highly relevant to this year's question for HBS and actually for most b-school essay questions:\u00a0\"The essay is a chance to get to know you beyond the elements of the application that feel fixed and stationary.\"<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I think that's true this year too. The essay is a chance for HBS to get to know you beyond your resume and the limited and limiting\u00a0boxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Now THINK. What else \u2013 really and truly -- do you want HBS to know about you? The HBS admissions committee has told you what it wants to know in the other\u00a0sections of the application. What do\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0want the HBS readers to know? The answer to that question is not something I can give or even suggest to you in a blog post aimed at the many. (For individual advice, please see Accepted\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/services\/mba\/admissionsconsulting.aspx\">MBA Admissions Consulting<\/a>.) It should be different for each of you. Again, refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/Pages\/who-are-we-looking-for.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">HBS criteria<\/a>, as you contemplate possible topics, but the options are infinite. A few possibilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Context for events described in the required elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Motivations for the decisions or commitments you have made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Challenges you have faced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0Something you would like to do at HBS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 \u00a0\u00a0More depth on an activity or commitment that is particularly important to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Please don\u2019t limit yourself to these suggestions. I am offering them to stimulate your creativity, not to shut it down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Since I\u2019ve been in MBA admissions consulting (over\u00a020 years now), <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/HarvardHBS.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">HBS<\/a> has valued concision. And, in today\u2019s tweet- and sound-bite-driven world, it is requiring even shorter responses, at least in the other portions\u00a0of the application. Don\u2019t take the absence of a word limit on this\u00a0essay as a license for verbosity. Make every word count. If you must pull a number out of me, keep it under 1000\u00a0words. And if you can say what you need to say in less than 1000\u00a0words, do so. A few caveats and warnings on the essay.
