It also allows you to write an Optional Statement. I'm not sure if that was available last year. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before you sit down to write the essays, review <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/michiganross.umich.edu\/programs\/full-time-mba\/application-requirements\" target=\"_blank\">Ross' Evaluation Criteria<\/a>\u00a0and <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/michiganross.umich.edu\/admissions-blog\/2015\/05\/20\/here-are-new-essay-questions-michigan-ross-mba-application\" target=\"_blank\">Admissions Director Soojin Kwon's <strong><em>excellent<\/em><\/strong><\/a> blog post on last year's questions, \u00a0which are similar but not identical to this year's prompts. Most importantly\u00a0remember: your essays should reveal the qualities Ross seeks -- not just mouth them. Show that you walk the walk, not just talk the talk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My comments are in blue below.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/michiganross.umich.edu\/admissions-blog\/2015\/05\/20\/here-are-new-essay-questions-michigan-ross-mba-application\" target=\"_blank\">Essays<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essay 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What are you most proud of outside of your professional life? How does it shape who you are today? <em>(400-word max)<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The first part of the question is fairly straightforward. <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2013\/06\/23\/what-is-an-accomplishment-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">What are you truly proud of<\/a>? This experience's influence on you -- the second part of the prompt -- require thought and soul-searching. And of course, you only have 400 words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ross added to this question the phrase \"outside of your professional life.\" They can assess\u00a0your achievements from your resume and job history. This question is about non-professional interests, contribution and achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Possible examples: Contributed significantly\u00a0to\u00a0your sports team, church, or club. Raised money for a favorite charity. Organized a political event. Engaged in interfaith dialogue that broke down communications barriers. Led a sports team to victory. Or perhaps, overcame\u00a0a significant personal challenge. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">When appropriate, quantify the impact or provide context.\u00a0Numbers are a great way to show both contribution and impact. \u00a0However, if your #1 achievement is qualitative or difficult to quantify, don\u2019t let lack of numbers stop you from using it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The question doesn't ask why you are proud of your achievement, but I believe the question is implied as indicated in Soojin Kwon's post about\u00a0this year's questions. She wrote\u00a0on her blog \"We want to understand what makes something important to you. It gives us a glimpse into how you think about and process things, and what your priorities and values are.\" Briefly discuss\u00a0reasons that genuinely reflect who you are and also show fit with Ross and its values.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">For the last\u00a0part of the question (how did it shape who you are today?), think and then focus. Choose one or two lessons from this accomplishment that\u00a0changed how you think or behave and describe those changes. \u00a0You don\u2019t have room for many lessons learned, so select the most important.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Please don\u2019t write that you learned you can do anything you put your mind to. That response is cliched and not really true. There are limits to what you can do. An effective response will show\u00a0how this crucial\u00a0experience has molded you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essay 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is your desired career path and why?<em> (250\u00a0word max)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This question has 150 fewer words than it did last year when Ross had\u00a0a 400-word max.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">What do you want to do after you earn your MBA? This question doesn't limit itself to your first job. It asks for the \"path,\" \u00a0how would you like to see\u00a0your career progress. \u00a0Why is this path appealing to you? <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You can <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2012\/08\/01\/7-signs-an-experience-belongs-in-your-application-essay\/\" target=\"_blank\">point to an\u00a0experiences<\/a> (don't focus on\u00a0the same one used in your response to #1) that convinced you that the desired path\u00a0is right for you. That experience preferably will show you in a team setting, demonstrating leadership, and showing aptitude for Ross' MAP. \u00a0Analyze the impact of this event. Highlight\u00a01-3 aspects of this\u00a0experience that you enjoyed and that will also be part of your desired future direction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Write<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0genuinely about your future career, but realize as Soojin Kwon says that Ross uses the answers to see if business school makes sense.
