The video below\u00a0explores and clarifies this mission as well as the values Kellogg holds dear. I highly recommend that you watch it\u00a0to grasp Kellogg's fundamental beliefs as well as what it seeks from applicants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A couple of key takeaways from the video: Kellogg seeks\u00a0individuals who:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Have a growth mindset (for details, please see Caroline Dweck's\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0345472322\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0345472322&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=acceptedcom&amp;linkId=QQZYDFTNLG7C6TSY\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Mindset: The New Psychology of Success<\/em><\/a>, one of my favorite books).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<p>\u2022 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Work well in a collaborative environment while striving to grow individually and at the same time\u00a0inspiring growth in individuals, organizations, and markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JFX6KdHQ0CU?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My tips are in blue below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kellogg.northwestern.edu\/programs\/full-time-mba\/admissions\/application-process.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Essays<\/a>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Essay 1.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Leadership and teamwork are integral parts of the Kellogg experience. Describe a recent and meaningful time you were a leader. What challenges did you face, and what did you learn? (<em>450 words<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">First things first: Kellogg is asking for ONE experience. Not more. It also reflects Kellogg's belief that teamwork and <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/leadership-in-admissions-2\">leadership<\/a> go hand-in-hand. Unlike similar essay questions, Kellogg is not limiting you to professional settings. You do have the option to use a non-professional leadership experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You can use a STAR framework for this response (Situation, Task, Action, Results). Start with the situation and simply describe what was\u00a0situation\/problem\/opportunity you were asked to respond to. Then relate your group's task and your responsibility. How did you motivate others to move in one direction? How did you influence and persuade? Finally what were the results for the group? And what did you learn about leadership, collaboration, and influence?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">While it isn't a requirement, and I can imagine instances where this may not be true, examples where you led\u00a0by virtue of your stature and others' respect for you will be more compelling than those where you led by virtue of station and title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essay 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pursuing an MBA is a catalyst for personal and professional growth. How have you grown in the past? How do you intend to grow at Kellogg? (<em>450 words<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This is a difficult question, and the response should provide Kellogg with\u00a0real insight into the individuals\u00a0applying to its MBA program.\u00a0Before responding do your homework on the Kellogg program and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/goalsessay\" target=\"_blank\">what you want to do after you leave Kellogg<\/a>. The latter will tell you how you want to grow and the former will tell you how you will do so at Kellogg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">First think about the times you have grown either professionally or personally. Which of those instances would you like Kellogg to know about? Ideally the event you choose to focus on will relate in some way\u00a0to the growth you want to have at Kellogg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Then reflect on\u00a0how you intend to grow while at Kellogg. I think the strong answer to this question will\u00a0really go beyond mere skill acquisition, although that can be part of your response. How are you going to take advantage of what Kellogg offers to become more like the people in the video: able to see opportunity when faced with challenge, to envision\u00a0a beautiful finished structure when staring at a bare shell, and\u00a0to harness your\u00a0emotional intelligence and acquired skills to lead collaboratively and with\u00a0clarity of purpose?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Finally this very short essay also asks for you to give an example of a time your grew in the past. You can tie your future growth to this past growth, even if not in a professional arena, by highlighting your vision, emotional intelligence, or ability to lead in a collaborative and\u00a0non-hierarchical setting in the past and in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Certain applicants will respond to additional questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dual-degree applicants:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For applicants to the MMM or <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2014\/10\/02\/at-the-nexus-of-business-law-penn-whartons-jdmba\/\">JD-MBA<\/a> dual degree programs, please explain why that program is right for you. (<em>250 words<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">A straight-forward response is required here. What do you want to do that requires both degrees? Why is this joint program the right one to fill in the gaps in your education and take you to a point where you can go down your desired professional path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Re-applicants:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since your previous application, what steps have you taken to strengthen your candidacy? <em>(250 word limit)<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">No trick questions here. How are you a better candidate today than when Kellogg rejected you? Have you addressed weaknesses in your previous application? Check out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/reapplication\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">MBA Reapplicant 101<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a lot of (free) resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>All applicants have the opportunity to provide explanations or clarification in <strong>Additional Information<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If needed, use this section to briefly describe any extenuating circumstances (e.g. unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, etc.) (<em>no word count<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">This is a true <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/2012\/03\/25\/optional-essays-when-and-how-to-write-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">optional question<\/a> If necessary, use it to provide context for possible negatives. Take responsibility for mistakes if necessary and discuss what you have changed so that you don't err in the same way again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Keep this section short and to-the-point. Don\u2019t be fooled by \u201cNo word count.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Video Essay:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">The Video Essays provide applicants with an additional opportunity to demonstrate what they will bring to our vibrant Kellogg community \u2013 in an interactive way. Each applicant will complete two short video essay questions. The questions are designed to bring to life the person we have learned about on paper.<\/p>\n<p>After submitting a completed application, each applicant will be asked to complete two Video Essay Questions. One will be about the candidate\u2019s interest in Kellogg and the other will be a \u201cgetting to know you\u201d type of question.<\/p>\n<p>There are 10 practice questions which candidates can complete as many times as they like to get comfortable with the format and technology. The practice questions and experience will simulate the actual video essay experience, so this is meant to be a useful tool and help applicants feel prepared.<\/p>\n<p>There is not an opportunity to re-do the answer to the official video essay questions. We encourage applicants to practice so they are comfortable with the format once it is time to complete the official questions.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates will have 20 seconds to think about their question and up to 1 minute to give their response.<\/p>\n<p>We estimate the Video Essays will take 15-20 minutes to complete \u2013 which includes time for set-up and answering all the practice questions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To prepare for your webcam session, you need to practice for the experience of talking to a video camera with no responses from another human being.
