The business school just announced that 43% of its incoming class will be women, a record high. Just six years ago, women represented only 36% of new students. This year’s acceptance rate was a competitive 11%, with 90% of all accepted students matriculating, a percentage unsurpassed by any business school in the world. About a quarter of new students come from the finance field, while students coming from consulting has steadily decreased over recent years. This is CBS’s fourth straight increase, and it joins a host of other top MBA programs that also reported increases in applications this cycle. “We have been inviting prospective students to participate in the Columbia Business School Centennial Celebrations. This has been a unique opportunity for the next generation of CBS students to connect with alumni and meet Dean Hubbard in their home regions,” said Amanda Carlson, assistant dean of admissions. The business school is exploring the option of opening up a campus in Havana. While the United Kingdom and much of the rest of Europe has long had fraternal relations with the communist island, Cass says it is the first MBA program to explore education and research opportunities there. As for what international MBA students might get out of studying in Cuba, Sionade Robinson, associate dean at Cass Business School, says, “A unique and once in a lifetime opportunity to look at the challenges in organizational design, leadership and management, as businesses in Cuba emerge from the long-standing embargo.” (Business Because)

Telling your story to the admissions committee

While your MBA application essay is not nearly as important in the admissions process as your GMAT/GRE score or your undergraduate GPA, what you write can help seal the deal by piquing the interest of admissions officers, who may then be more inclined to give your application a second look if it’s lacking in other areas. In any case, you should always give admissions essays your all. Here are some pieces of advice on how to get started: Talk to people who care about you and want you to succeed. Ask them about your best attributes—and it doesn’t hurt to find out what your weaknesses are either. (Don’t get offended!) You should also keep a journal. Keep track of what impacts you in the weeks leading up to you when you start writing.
