Why? These programs can provide you with a network at your target post-MBA employer before you even step foot on campus, giving you a crucial edge over your new peers.<\/p>\n<p>In the same way your <a href=\"https:\/\/admissionado.leadpages.co\/50-mba-essays-that-worked\/\">stellar application essays<\/a> set you apart from the crowd during application season, your pre-MBA internship helps you stand out at B-School.<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Pre-MBA internship?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s an internship that happens before your MBA.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/admissionado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/obviously.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21459\" src=\"https:\/\/admissionado.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/obviously.gif\" alt=\"Jim from The Office, &quot;obviously&quot;\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s the easy answer, but actually \u201cpre-MBA\u201d programs break down into TWO distinct categories which can be a biiiiiit confusing. Pre-MBA internships programs are indeed \u201cbefore your MBA,\u201d but some of them are proper internships lasting 1-3 months, while others are introductory programs, lasting only a few weeks or days.<\/p>\n<p>Orientation programs are shorter and more about \u201cgetting to know you\u201d and having fun. The objective of these programs is for potential post-MBA job applicants to get a sense of the company and to place the company solidly on their radar. They\u2019re a marketing opportunity for the company, but a valuable networking opportunity for you (in addition to being great fun).<\/p>\n<h3>Here are some example pre-MBA \u201corientation\u201d internships:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/careers\/events\/premba.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Bain Diversity Pre-MBA Program<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/careers\/articles\/join-deloitte-deloitte-consulting-immersion-program.html\" target=\"_blank\">Deloitte Consulting Immersion Program<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/careers\/why-goldman-sachs\/diversity\/diversity-us.html\" target=\"_blank\">Goldman Sachs MBA Camp \/ Women\u2019s Summit<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/us.pgcareers.com\/students\/mba-brand-management-camp\/\" target=\"_blank\">Proctor and Gamble pre-MBA Brand Management Camp<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/careers.jpmorgan.com\/careers\/programs\/early-advantage-ba\" target=\"_blank\">JP Morgan Early Advantage<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortefoundation.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=events_moveahead_apply\" target=\"_blank\">Fort\u00e9 Fast Track program (open to women only)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/edu\/resources\/programs\/google-student-veteran-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\">Google Student Veteran Summit (for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.credit-suisse.com\/us\/en\/careers\/career-opportunities\/students-and-graduates\/internship-opportunities\/americas-diversity-and-inclusion-programs.html\" target=\"_blank\">Credit Suisse MBA Military Bootcamp<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.williamblair.com\/en\/Careers\/Campus-Recruiting\/Investment-Banking\/LIFT-MBA-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">William Blair LIFT program<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More rare are full internships, which take place in the summer before matriculation. There are structured programs offered by larger, more established companies, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/joinus.barclays.com\/americas\/diversity-programs\/mba-ambition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barclays MBA Ambition<\/a>, however most full-time pre-MBA internships are not \u201cofficial\u201d internships, but the result of motivated applicants cold-calling, cold-emailing or networking to get that first foothold in their target industries.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously these pre-MBA internships are harder to find, but they can also pay off the most. They, along with your first-year summer internship, give you two chances to make an impression on your target post-MBA employer.<\/p>\n<h2>Who are pre-MBA programs for?<\/h2>\n<p>Orientation programs, given their brevity (1-7 days), are useful to anyone. The limited scope works even for people who can spare only a day or two on their way to B-School. However, the orientation material covered is particularly useful for out-of-industry applicants and non-traditional MBA students who might not be as familiar with the basics. Also, keep in mind that many of these orientation programs are diversity-related (open only to specific minority groups).<\/p>\n<p>Full-time internships are especially valuable to <a href=\"https:\/\/admissionado.com\/mba\/the-tuesday-qa-career-changes-and-the-mba-application-essay\/\">career-switchers<\/a>, and especially those switching into traditional pre-MBA fields: for example, Consulting, Finance, Healthcare, and Tech. Since many MBA students have prior experience in these sectors, career-switchers need as many internships as they can get in order to compete. Similarly, these opportunities are also especially valuable for non-traditional applicants who may lack the corporate network that many of their peers already possess.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the advantages of a Pre-MBA program?<\/h2>\n<p>The advantages are many, especially if you are changing industries. You get a jump on your peers, a network in your target industry, insight, experience, and another prestigious program name on your resume. So get to it!
