Most prospective MBAs apply to school planning to make a career change and\/or obtain a higher salary. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kurtbadenhausen\/2017\/09\/25\/the-best-business-schools-2017-behind-the-numbers\/#27b5343e4452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 tenth biennial rankings<\/a> of the best U.S. and international business schools are based exclusively on the median returns on investment seen by grads of the class of 2012. More than 100 schools and 17,500 alumni responded to questions about their pre- and post-MBA compensation, career choice, and location. 25% of the grads responded. Schools where less than 15% of their alumni responded were excluded from the survey as were schools where alumni had a negative ROI after five years.<\/p>\n<p>Schools were ranked only on their five-year MBA gain \u2013 the net cumulative amount the average alumni would have earned after five years by getting their MBA versus staying in their pre-MBA career. <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/get_accepted_to_wharton_webinar\">Wharton<\/a> took first place in the U.S. schools for the first time. London School of Business was the best two-year international program, and IMD is the best one-year program.<\/p>\n<p>Here are <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/business-schools\/#1d46f05d6d6d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbes\u2019<\/a><\/em> Best Domestic MBA, Two-Year International MBA, and One-Year International MBA programs:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic MBA Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53111\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Forbes-2017-Top-Domestic-MBA-Programs-1024x680.png\" alt=\"Forbes 2017 Top Domestic MBA Programs\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>International 2-Year Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53110\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Forbes-2017-Top-International-2-Year-MBA-Programs-1024x614.png\" alt=\"Forbes 2017 Top International 2 Year MBA Programs\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>International 1-Year Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53113\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Forbes-2017-Top-International-1-Year-MBA-Programs-1024x671.png\" alt=\"Forbes 2017 Top International 1 Year MBA Programs\" width=\"700\" height=\"459\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The most notable change in this year\u2019s <em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 ranking is Wharton\u2019s jump from seventh place to first, moving up a significant six places in the rankings and unseating Stanford, which had been #1 in the previous <em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 ranking from 2015. This is the first time that <em>Forbes<\/em> has crowned Wharton as #1 and the second time this year that a major ranking has done so \u2013 <em>U.S. News<\/em> named Wharton #1 in its 2018 rankings released last March.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Forbes<\/em> ranking is to me one of the more valuable of the rankings. It doesn\u2019t rely on opinions, although it does rely on self-reported data from students. It also doesn\u2019t even attempt to measure \u201ceducational quality,\u201d which may not be quantifiable or measurable, and definitely means different things to different people. It looks at one thing: Return on Investment.<\/p>\n<p>For Forbes\u2019 methodology and assumptions, please see \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kurtbadenhausen\/2017\/09\/25\/the-best-business-schools-2017-behind-the-numbers\/#55a8236c4452\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Behind the Numbers<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as <em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 rankings guru, Kurt Badenhausen writes \u201cEven with increased financial aid, an MBA is a huge investment, topping $300,000 in tuition and forgone salary at an elite school like Harvard, Stanford or Wharton. But our numbers show that a degree from a top school invariably pays off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>International programs were fairly stable in the <em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 ranking of one-year and two-year international programs. Naturally ROI for one-year programs is higher and the payback period is shorter.<\/p>\n<p>Two interesting developments outside the U.S.:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 Tiny IMD unseated INSEAD for the #1 position in Forbes\u2019 Global Ranking. INSEAD dropped to #2.
