For this upcoming cycle the last deadline will be the exclusive 2+2 deadline, unless Harvard changes something. In 2018, that deadline occurred on April 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Ironically, MIT Sloan, Harvard's neighbor in Cambridge, only added a third round a couple of years ago. Until then MIT had only two rounds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Harvard Business School, ranked #1 by <em>US News<\/em>, is, according to Accepted's <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/selectivity-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">B-School Selectivity Index<\/a>, the second hardest MBA program to get into, following Stanford GSB. That status reflects HBS' second lowest acceptance rate (11%), the third highest average GMAT for accepted students (729),\u00a0 and second highest GPA for accepted students (3.67). However, that second-place status is misleading. The Harvard brand is matched perhaps only by Stanford, and the second-place standing is probably accounted for by class size more than anything else. Harvard's class is more than double Stanford's, and Harvard simply accepts more people so its acceptance rate is higher\u00a0 (Data is from the <a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/premium.usnews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-business-schools\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>US News 2019 Rankings<\/em><\/a> for the class that entered in 2017).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">On to the Harvard MBA application and essay question itself:\u00a0 HBS clearly likes the responses it has received to the last two years' excellent essay question because this year's question is identical. Indeed there is little change in HBS' application this year, period. The essay is again required, and there is NO word limit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">The round 1 and round 2 deadlines are only slightly different\u00a0from last year. The Round 1 deadline is Sept. 5, 2018, one day earlier than last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Harvard Business School Application Tips<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>There is <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/application-process\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one question<\/a><\/strong><strong> for the Class of 2021:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>There is no word limit for this question. We think you know what guidance we're going to give here. Don't overthink, overcraft and overwrite. Just answer the question in clear language that those of us who don't know your world can understand.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Before you begin to write I have two suggestions for you:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>1.<\/strong> Review <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/mba\/admissions\/Pages\/who-are-we-looking-for.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harvard's criteria for admission<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>2.<\/strong> Watch the embedded video on the case method at HBS.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Perspectives on the Case Method\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zp70pCiqcwk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">My two cents: I think this is a great essay question. It allows you to choose what you want the school to know about you without having to fit that information into a framework required by a question that doesn't really align with your story. It also allows you to demonstrate judgment and communications skills,which are critical given Harvard's residential culture, study groups, and case method.\u00a0 Finally, this essay is a chance for HBS to get to know you beyond your resume and the limited (and limiting) boxes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Now THINK. What else \u2013 really and truly -- do you want HBS to know about you? The HBS admissions committee has told you what it wants to know in the other\u00a0sections of the application. What do\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0want the HBS readers to know? The answer to that question is not something I can give or even suggest to you in a blog post aimed at the many (for individual guidance, please see Accepted\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/services\/consulting?utm_campaign=Blog&amp;utm_medium=hbs_tips&amp;utm_source=blog\">MBA Admissions Consulting<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">). It will be different for each of you. Again, refer to the HBS criteria, as you contemplate possible topics, but the options are infinite. A few possibilities:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>Context for events described in the required elements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>Motivations for the decisions or commitments you have made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>Experiences that shaped your dreams for the future, which may just benefit enormously from an HBS education (caveat: HBS doesn't ask why you want to attend Harvard).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/the-importance-of-obstacles-in-your-application-essays\/\">Challenges you have faced.<\/a>\u00a0These could be personal challenges, or perhaps interpersonal challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>Something you would like to do at HBS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>More depth on an activity or commitment that is particularly important to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Please don\u2019t limit yourself to these suggestions. I am offering them to stimulate your creativity, not to shut it down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/harvard-business-school?utm_campaign=Blog&amp;utm_source=webinar&amp;utm_medium=text_cta\"><strong>[Free Webinar: Get Accepted to\u00a0Harvard Business School]<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Since I\u2019ve been in MBA admissions consulting (over\u00a020 years now), HBS has valued concision. And, in today\u2019s tweet- and sound-bite-driven world, it is requiring even shorter responses, at least in the other portions\u00a0of the application. Don\u2019t take the absence of a word limit on this\u00a0essay as a license for verbosity. Make every word count, no pun intended. If you must pull a number out of me, keep it under 1000\u00a0words. And if you can say what you need to say in less than 1000\u00a0words, do so. A few cautions and warnings regarding this essay -- it is NOT:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 Stanford\u2019s \u201cwhat matters most to you and why?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 The kitchen sink in which you throw everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 An autobiography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 A resume in prose or a rehash of your transcript and honors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2022 <\/span>An ode to the awesomeness of Harvard. They don't need you to tell them they have a great institution that you would be honored to attend.
