The word limits are tight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Columbia Business School Application Essay Tips<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goal:<\/strong> What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? <em>(50 characters)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">No changes with this question. Note, it is a\u00a0<strong>character <\/strong>(not word)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>limit. Your response must be significantly less than a tweet. What do you want to do professionally and in which industry immediately after earning your MBA? \u00a0Here are CBS\u2019\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www8.gsb.columbia.edu\/programs-admissions\/mba\/admissions\/application-requirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">examples of possible responses<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWork in business development for a media company.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cJoin a strategy consulting firm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cLaunch a data-management start-up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Warning: This question is not asking about intended area of study while in business school or a non-professional goal or even a long-term goal.\u00a0 And the subject in your response is assumed to be you. No need to waste characters by including \u201cI.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Succinctly define your goal in terms of function (what you want to do) and the industry (or type of company) in which you want to do it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Columbia Business School Essay #1:<\/h2>\n<p>Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3 - 5 years and what, in your imagination, would be your long-term dream job?\u00a0<em>(500 words)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Columbia apparently liked the answers it received to this question, its longest, because it is back this year. CBS wants you to focus on your career goals not immediately after graduation, as in the short-answer question,\u00a0but in the longer-term. They want to see how you believe your career will develop after that immediate post-MBA job.\u00a0 This question does <strong>not<\/strong> ask you how CBS will help you achieve your goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To answer this question realize that the\u00a0readers already know what\u2019s in <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/resume_guide\">your resume<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">. Don\u2019t repeat \u201cyour career path to date.\u201d That\u2019s a waste of valuable essay real estate and means you\u2019re not telling them anything new or answering their question.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Do tell them what you want to do 3-5 years into the future, which should build on your first post-MBA job. Make sure to\u00a0answer the long-term question and feel free to dream and\u00a0aspire, but at the same time reveal an ambitious, but feasible professional goal. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Columbia Business School Essay #2:<\/h2>\n<p>How will you take advantage of being \"at the very center of business\"?\u00a0<em>(250 Words)\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Please watch this<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IAsVBg-LIuo&amp;index=2&amp;list=PL391B62155C9CEAB2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> short video featuring Dean Glenn Hubbard<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How will you take advantage of being \u201cat the very center of business?\u201d\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IAsVBg-LIuo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">While Dean Hubbard's video is shorter, I believe the following video illustrates more effectively what \"being at the very center of business\" means.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Center\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZWnlIes1wWA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Different from last year's question, this year's Essay 2 is very similar to the question that occupied this slot two and three years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Really think about the points these videos are making: What does being at the center mean? Access to an infinite variety of opportunities. Proximity to <a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/leadership-in-admissions-2\">thought leadership and executive leadership<\/a>. Convergence of theory and practice. NYC is an \u2014 if not <em>the<\/em> \u2014 international business center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\">\n<div id=\"stcpDiv\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">After watching\u00a0the videos,\u00a0reflect on how you intend to take advantage of the myriad opportunities and energy that reside at Columbia University and in\u00a0New York City. How will you benefit from\u00a0the entrepreneurial eco-system in New York and Columbia University? The ties to bio science and pharma? Madison Avenue? \u00a0The cutting-edge research and thought leadership? Not to mention the practitioners who lead Wall Street and teach at Columbia. Or will you explore the cultural riches of NYC\u00a0and take advantage\u00a0of the incredible business opportunities present in the arts and media?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Be careful not to speak of those opportunities in the generalities that I have. If you are interested in luxury goods marketing, as stated in your short answer, then write\u00a0here about how you will take advantage of Madison and 5th Avenues as well as Columbia\u2019s offerings. If you are interested in finance or consulting, Manhattan and all the businesses in it are at your feet. How will you benefit from\u00a0this incredible location as well as the practitioners teaching at CBS and the strengths of Columbia's curriculum and program? Be specific.<\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Final point: you don\u2019t have to address all the points raised in the videos, but you do have to write persuasively about at least one.<\/span><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Columbia Business School Essay #3:<\/h2>\n<p>Please provide an example of a team failure of which you have been a part. If given a second chance, what would you do differently? <em>(250 words)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">First of all think about what causes teams to fail. Accepted consultant Natalie Grinblatt Epstein brilliantly and briefly explores that topic in \"<a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/get-a-grip-on-team-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get a GRIP on Team Questions.<\/a>\"\u00a0 Secondly, realize that CBS is looking here for applicants who can examine their actions critically, learn from mistakes\u00a0 -- both their own and others, and take responsibility for errors of commission and omission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In your response, succinctly describe the failure. analyze its causes, and what you would do differently. If you have room and an appropriate example, conclude with a later team experience when you successfully implemented the lesson you learned from the earlier team failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">Columbia Business School Optional Essay:<\/h2>\n<p>Is there any further information that you wish to provide the Admissions Committee? If so, use this space to provide an explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or your personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay. You may submit bullet points.\u00a0<em>(Maximum 500 words)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Clearly you can use this\u00a0optional essay\u00a0question to address a\u00a0weakness\u00a0in your profile or qualifications, but in my mind, this question is also open-ended enough to allow you to discuss a challenge overcome in your personal background.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Don\u2019t use this essay as a grand finale or wrap up.
