{"id":4332,"date":"2010-09-10T10:22:16","date_gmt":"2010-09-10T18:22:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/?p=4332"},"modified":"2010-09-10T10:22:16","modified_gmt":"2010-09-10T18:22:16","slug":"veritas-prep-gmat-tips-your-sentence-correction-objective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/veritas-prep-gmat-tips-your-sentence-correction-objective\/","title":{"rendered":"Veritas Prep GMAT Tips: Your Sentence Correction Objective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Galvin is the Director of Academic Programs at Veritas Prep, where he oversees all of the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veritasprep.com\/s\/gmat\/gmat-prep-course-overview\/\">GMAT preparation courses<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are having a difficult time with Sentence Correction, there is a strong chance that you are\u00a0 either relying a bit too much on your ear (\u201cwhat sounds right?\u201d) or on the descriptions from the Official Guide (which seldom sound right).\u00a0 To be successful on Sentence Correction, it is crucial to know that SC questions are as mechanical and logical as any other question type, and that they allow you to showcase your problem solving and analytical skills.<\/p>\n<p>While Official Guide solutions tend to feature descriptions such as \u201cawkward\u201d or \u201cunidiomatic\u201d quite frequently, for your own purposes you should try to make your decisions based on concrete reasons, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The subject does not numerically agree with the verb<\/li>\n<li>The pronoun does not numerically agree with its antecedent<\/li>\n<li>The verb tenses do not provide a logical timeline of events<\/li>\n<li>The modifier does not logically describe what it modifies<\/li>\n<li>The items in a comparison are not in parallel form<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you will note, these rules are binary \u2013 one part of the sentence either does or does not agree with the other, be it numerically or logically.\u00a0 Elements of style (title of the definitive grammar book notwithstanding) are not \u201cstandardized\u201d enough to make them fodder for a standardized test, and don\u2019t lend themselves to test the types of skills \u2013 logic, problem solving, efficiency, etc. \u2013 that business schools want to ensure that you have.\u00a0 As such, you\u2019ll find it much more efficient to study by focusing on the major, logical error categories than to try to crack style and idiomatic expressions (and you won\u2019t need to know many of the latter at all).\u00a0 Accordingly, as you practice with Sentence Correction questions you should hold yourself accountable for those high-level errors.\u00a0 This drill can help:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a set of 20 SC questions and write down a 1-3 word description for why you eliminate each answer choice as you progress.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever you use a term like \u201cawkward\u201d, \u201cidiom\u201d, or \u201csounded wrong\u201d, go back to that question to determine a more concrete reason that the choice was incorrect.\u00a0 Write that word down in another color or type.<\/li>\n<li>Go back to the set again to track those errors that you didn\u2019t see the first time, and note any repeats.\u00a0 Those are error categories that you need to study more thoroughly and for which you need to train yourself to look so that you don\u2019t fall into a trap of relying too heavily on subjective reasons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Train yourself to see Sentence Correction questions mechanically and logically and you will not only improve your accuracy but also leave plenty of time to read Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning prompts.\u00a0 Sentence Correction is as objective a question type as any other; learn to see it that way and you\u2019re that much closer to achieving your overall GMAT objective.<\/p>\n<p>Read more GMAT advice in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veritasprep.com\/gmat-prep-books\/\">GMAT lesson booklets<\/a> which are now available for individual purchase.\u00a0 Ready to sign up for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veritasprep.com\/s\/gmat\/gmat-prep-course-overview\/\">GMAT course<\/a>?
