Here\u2019s a classic MBA admissions interview question gives many candidates pause:
\nWhat other schools are you applying to?<\/h2>\n

Every school wants to know they\u2019re your first choice. So how to answer this tricky interview question?<\/p>\n

First,\u00a0you want to demonstrate sound reasoning for why you\u2019re applying to other programs in the context of why this school is still number one, says Fortuna Expert Coach Karen Hamou, CBS alum and former Deloitte recruiting lead.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say you\u2019re interviewing with Columbia. Consider contextualizing your response in this way:<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven my interest in doing my MBA in NYC, I am also applying to Stern. While Stern could also provide me with a strong finance education, CBS remains my #1 choice due to its unique value investing program.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n

Also, know that underneath this question is a subtle assessment of your depth of knowledge of a program\u2019s values, culture and unique value proposition. \u201cOf course, they also know that you\u2019re applying to other programs \u2013 they expect that and it\u2019s a sensible thing to do. But to win their acceptance, show them the love,\u201d says Fortuna Expert Coach Amy Hugo, former London Business School manager of admissions and recruitment, in her article on tailoring your b-school application<\/a>. \u201cThis means going the extra mile to prove you understand a school\u2019s unique culture and values, and that you\u2019ve given considered thought both to how you\u2019ll contribute to their community what you hope to gain from it.\u201d<\/p>\n
