Why? Businesses realize they will market more effectively if they can speak to different audiences and markets. Schools simply want to prepare graduates for the 21st-century job market.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/different-dimensions-diversity-episode-193\/\"><strong>Listen to our podcast and find out how to approach diversity in your application.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\">6 Different Ways to Show Your Diversity<\/h2>\n<p>Adcoms want to know about your diversity elements and the way they have helped you develop particular <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/proving-character-traits-in-your-application-essays\/\">character and personality traits<\/a>, as well as the unusual experiences that have shaped you.<\/p>\n<p>Here are six examples you could write about:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"spacing\">You grew up with a strong insistence on respecting elders, attending family events, or learning your parents\u2019 native language and culture.<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\">You are close to grandparents and extended family who have taught you how teamwork can help everyone thrive.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-44043\" src=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/grandfather-granddaughter-1024x459.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/grandfather-granddaughter-1024x459.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/grandfather-granddaughter-1024x459-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gmatclub.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/grandfather-granddaughter-1024x459-768x344.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/>\n<p class=\"spacing\">\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\">You have had to face difficulties that stem from your parents\u2019 values being in conflict with yours or those of your peers.<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\">Teachers have not always understood the elements of your culture or outside-of-school situation and how they influence your performance.<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\">You suffered from discrimination and succeeded s in spite of the discrimination, because of your values and character.<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\">You learned skills from a lifestyle that is outside the norm \u2013 living in foreign countries as the child of diplomats or contractors; performing professionally in theater, dance, music, or sports; or communicating with a deaf sibling.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And remember, it\u2019s not just about who your parents are. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/admissions-tip\/\">It\u2019s about who you are<\/a> \u2013 at the core.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your background, your influences, your religious observances, your language, your ideas, your work environment, your community experiences \u2013 all of these factors come together to create a unique individual, an individual who can contribute to a diverse class and a diverse world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"h2-resize\">How to Write About Your Diversity<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/different-dimensions-diversity-episode-193\/\">Your answer to the diversity question<\/a> should focus on how your experiences have built your empathy for others, your resilience, your character, and your perspective.<\/p>\n<p>Whether the school asks you how you think of diversity or how you can bring or add to the diversity of your school, chosen profession, or community, make sure you answer the specific question posed. Your response should highlight a distinctive you that will add to the class mosaic every adcom is trying to create. Adcoms want each student to add to the overall picture. You don\u2019t want to blend in; you want to stand out but also complement the school\u2019s canvas.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple, three-part framework that will help you think of diversity more\u2026 well diversely:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"spacing\"><strong>Identity:<\/strong> Who are you? What has contributed to your identity? How do you distinguish yourself? Your identity can include any of the following: gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, religion, non-traditional work experience, non-traditional educational background, multi-cultural background, and family\u2019s educational level.<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\"><strong>Deeds:<\/strong> What have you done? What have you accomplished? This could include:\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>a.<\/strong> Achievements inside and outside your field of study<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>b.<\/strong> Leadership opportunities<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>c.<\/strong> Community service<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>d.<\/strong> Military experience<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>e.<\/strong> Internship or professional experience<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>f.<\/strong> Research opportunities<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>g.<\/strong> Hobbies<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\"><strong>h.<\/strong> Travel<\/p>\n<p class=\"spacing\">Any or all of these could be unique. Also, what life-derailing, throw-you-for-a-loop challenges have you faced and overcome?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"spacing\"><strong>Ideas:<\/strong> How do you think? How do you approach things? What drives you? What influences you?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/different-dimensions-diversity-episode-193\/\"><strong>Learn more about this three-part framework in this blog post.<\/strong><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Think about each question and how you could apply your diversity elements to the classroom, your school, or your community. Any of these elements will serve as the framework for your essay.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t worry if you can\u2019t think of something totally \u201cout there\u201d!
