Congratulations! You\u2019ve landed your dream school! Your family\u2019s thrilled, and after months of preparation and many bottles of champagne, you\u2019ve arrived on campus and are ready to LEARN. \u201cSo long application process, you cruel mistress.\u201d But wait, what\u2019s this? Internships? I need<\/em> to apply?<\/em><\/p>\n

Yes my friends, life is a journey, and the applications
\ndon\u2019t end when you\u2019ve been admitted to your MBA program. Internships are more
\nimportant to the MBA experience than they\u2019ve ever been, and choosing the right
\none could be just as important as choosing the right school. Luckily, your
\nschool knows this, and they\u2019ve got your back \u2013 provided you\u2019re proactive and put
\nin the legwork.<\/p>\n

Most MBA programs provide support right from the jump, and will help you line up internship opportunities the minute you\u2019re accepted. Let\u2019s call this the \u201cfast track\u201d approach since the aim is to maximize your professional experience as soon as you\u2019re accepted into the program. Furthermore, many focus on \u201cquality\u201d and encourage students to find a \u201cGoldie Locks\u201d internship \u2013 the one that\u2019s juuuuussstttt right for you. They want you to consider your IDEAL internship before your first semester even begins. Some, like Yale, even integrate internships into your curriculum, making them mandatory outright, as they claim over a quarter of their grads return to their summer employers full time, with many more receiving offers. So the good news is that you\u2019ve got support \u2013 you knew grad school would be good for something!<\/p>\n

If you are one of the many (and we do mean many) MBA
\nstudents using the degree as an opportunity to switch careers, these
\ninternships are even more important. An internship is your opportunity to test
\nthe waters and see what life is really<\/em>
\nlike in a given industry, all while gaining the experience you need to jump to
\na new field. Consider it your chance to \u201ctry before you buy\u201d so to speak, as
\nmany a student has refined or even shifted his or her career interests
\npost-internship. However, you DON\u2019T want to be wishy-washy with your choice of
\ninternship here, as every choice made closes other doors. Internships are
\nincreasingly about your long-term goals rather than simply exploration, as the
\nlandscape gets increasingly competitive.<\/p>\n

Additionally, like countless other aspects of your MBA, this won\u2019t be a walk in the park. Summer internships cram another three months of work in a two-year MBA that\u2019s stuffed to the brim with courses, networking opportunities and extracurricular activities. You\u2019ll be busy, very<\/em> busy, but you\u2019ll thank yourself once you\u2019ve graduated as the right internship will give you a much-needed leg up during your post-graduation job hunt. What\u2019s more, while not all MBA internships are paid, the majority offer very competitive salaries<\/a> \u2013 $6,600 to $10.6K per month on average depending on your industry of choice! That can knock off a chunk of those every increasing MBA costs.<\/p>\n

(And yes, consulting firms are the most generous.
\nNaturally.) <\/p>\n

Have we sold you on the importance of these internships yet?
\nGood. So onto the big question: are they time sensitive? Increasingly so, as
\ncompanies that have historically recruited from both first and second year
\nstudents have begun focusing most of their efforts on first years. That makes
\nchoosing the right internship, and choosing it early, more important than ever.
\nYour dream company would rather stick with a former intern, a known quantity
\nthey can count on, than hire some new wildcard. You<\/em> want to be that known quantity.<\/p>\n

After your internship, your odds of getting a job offer
\ndepends on a few factors: the state of the economy, your MBA program\u2019s career
\ndevelopment program, and how many alumni are at your firm of choice, among others.
\nIf you\u2019re interning in tech, an understanding of that field beyond business
\nwill play a key role as well. The good news is that your school DEFINITELY
\nwants to see you gainfully employed in the field of your choice,
\npost-internship, and will facilitate this with mixers, networking events and
\naccess to exclusive job postings.<\/p>\n

So what have we learned today? Internships rock. You want one. You NEED<\/em> one. And thankfully, your school is eager to help you land the one that\u2019s right for your career path. This is your opportunity to connect with the company of your dreams, and you don\u2019t want to miss out.<\/p>\n
