You may start out thinking that you have nothing to write, but generally, once applicants begin writing, they find they have too much to say!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep within those pesky word limits, you need to make sure you keep your writing succinct. How? Check your verbs. Poor usage of verbs creates verbosity. Effective use contributes to concision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5 ways to manage your word limits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few techniques, followed by examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Get rid of unnecessary helping verbs.<\/strong><strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;She is going to be applying to ten medical schools. (10 words)<strong>Succinct<\/strong>: She will apply to ten medical schools. (7 words)Another example:<strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;She is a skillful negotiator. (5 words)<strong>Succinct:<\/strong>&nbsp;She negotiates skillfully. (3 words)<\/li><li><strong>Replace adverbs that assist prosaic verbs with a simple, expressive verb.<\/strong><strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;He responded enthusiastically\u2026 (3 words)<strong>Succinct:<\/strong>&nbsp;He enthused\u2026 OR He gushed\u2026 (2 words)<\/li><li><strong>Forget about \u201ctaking advantage of the opportunity to do X.\u201d<\/strong><strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;I took advantage of the opportunity to do research on\u2026 (10 words)<strong>Succinct:<\/strong>&nbsp;I researched\u2026 (2 words)<\/li><li><strong>Seek the verbs in nouns.<\/strong><strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;I came to the conclusion\u2026 (5 words)<strong>Succinct:<\/strong>&nbsp;I concluded\u2026 (2 words)<\/li><li><strong>Minimize use of the passive voice.<\/strong><strong>Verbose:<\/strong>&nbsp;Experience A has been complemented by experience B. (8 words)<strong>Succinct:<\/strong>&nbsp;Experience B complements experience A.
