The application includes multiple elements, such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/everything-graduate-applicants-need-to-know-about-the-curriculum-vitae-cv\/\">a CV\/resume<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/from-example-to-exemplary-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a personal statement<\/a>, and grades, among other things. Because this application is key to receiving an admissions offer, it is important to be selective and strategic in choosing which elements of your academic career, personal experience, and professional development to highlight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many applicants are tempted to use the CV\/resume (and if you\u2019re not sure of the difference, see my article&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/everything-graduate-applicants-need-to-know-about-the-curriculum-vitae-cv\/\">HERE<\/a>) to simply reiterate or re-list their past experiences or qualifications in essay-form for their personal statement. This \u201cresume in prose\u201d undermines the&nbsp;<em>opportunity<\/em>&nbsp;the application provides for showcasing multiple sides of oneself. So, how do you decide what to cover in the personal statement when it feels like everything you\u2019ve ever done is already included in your CV?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to decide what to include in your personal statement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Step 1: Do a\u00a0<em>mental check<\/em>.<\/strong><br><br>Ask yourself, \u201cWhat aspects of my life (personal experiences; impactful teachers and classes; substantial extracurricular experience) had a significant impact on my life and outlook?\u201d\u00a0<br><br>I emphasize doing this mentally first because it is easy to turn to your CV or resume as a\u00a0<em>starting<\/em>\u00a0point for writing the personal statement; however, to begin with the CV is to risk overlooking other meaningful but non-CV material worth mentioning in a different part of the application, such as your personal statement. I cannot count the number of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/rachel-client-feedback?utm_campaign=Blog&amp;utm_medium=how_much_draw_on_resume_in_sop&amp;utm_source=blog\" target=\"_blank\">clients I have had<\/a>\u00a0who, only in the course of our conversations, have shared incredibly powerful experiences and self-insight that I would otherwise never have found written on a resume or CV. That institution might be so central to your narrative, or to the story of how you became interested in a particular graduate program or field of study, that it is necessary to include in the personal statement. Other items\u2014the archeological dig you were on in 2015, which was the turning point in your career interests\u2014or the lessons you learned from doing Teach for America last year\u2014might also be great to expand upon in the SOP. Lastly, perhaps counterintuitively, particular\u00a0<em>weaknesses<\/em>, such as a short-term job or a weak GPA,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/6-tips-for-talking-about-your-weaknesses\/\">should be addressed in the personal statement<\/a>.
