These are problems when you have multiple equations and multiple variables, and you have to find a way to solve for each variable.  Although we have two variables, we can only solve for one at a time.  Therefore, our goal is to eliminate one of the variables, and there are two methods for doing so: <strong>Combination <\/strong>and <strong>Substitution<\/strong>.  Both methods <em>always <\/em>work, but which should you use?  <\/p>\n<p>In short, it depends on the problem.  One of the core competencies in Kaplan\u2019s GMAT curriculum is Pattern Recognition, and our courses and materials aim to teach you to recognize which technique will get you to the answer <em>fastest<\/em>.   There are certain \u201ctriggers\u201d that let us know whether to combine or substitute; read below for the most fundamental triggers:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Combination is ideal when you can easily eliminate a variable by adding or subtracting the equations.<\/strong>  For example, by adding the following equations, you can get rid the <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=y&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='y' title='y' class='latex' \/>\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=5x+-+2y+%3D8&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='5x - 2y =8' title='5x - 2y =8' class='latex' \/><br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=3x+%2B+2y%3D+8&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='3x + 2y= 8' title='3x + 2y= 8' class='latex' \/><\/p>\n<p>Thus, <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=8x%3D16&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='8x=16' title='8x=16' class='latex' \/>, <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=x%3D2&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='x=2' title='x=2' class='latex' \/>, and we are golden.  You don\u2019t want to substitute in this situation because it\u2019s hard to get a \u201cclean\u201d value to substitute.  Who wants to plug <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%5Cfrac%7B8+-+3x%7D%7B2%7D&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='\\frac{8 - 3x}{2}' title='\\frac{8 - 3x}{2}' class='latex' \/> in for <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=y&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='y' title='y' class='latex' \/>?  Fractions are no fun when you\u2019re pressed for time.<\/p>\n<p>However, <strong>we should use substitution if we have a simple coefficient in front of one of the variables.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=x+%2B+3y+%3D+20&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='x + 3y = 20' title='x + 3y = 20' class='latex' \/><br \/>\n<img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=3x-4y+%3D+8&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='3x-4y = 8' title='3x-4y = 8' class='latex' \/><\/p>\n<p>This problem lends itself to substitution.  It\u2019s very easy to isolate x in the first equation (just subtract <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=3y&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='3y' title='3y' class='latex' \/> from each side to get <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=x%3D20-3y&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='x=20-3y' title='x=20-3y' class='latex' \/>), so we can substitute <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=%2820-3y%29&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='(20-3y)' title='(20-3y)' class='latex' \/> for <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=x&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='x' title='x' class='latex' \/> in the second equation.  Doing so, we find that <\/p>\n<p><img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=3%2820-3y%29+-+4y%3D+8&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='3(20-3y) - 4y= 8' title='3(20-3y) - 4y= 8' class='latex' \/><\/p>\n<p>Carrying out the algebra, we can find that <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=y%3D4&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='y=4' title='y=4' class='latex' \/>.<\/p>\n<p>Many combination aficionados would still argue that you could multiply the first equation by 3 and subtract the two equations to eliminate the <img src='https:\/\/s0.wp.com\/latex.php?latex=x&#038;bg=ffffff&#038;fg=000000&#038;s=0' alt='x' title='x' class='latex' \/>\u2019s.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>There are many cases when choosing combination or substitution is merely a matter of personal preference.<\/strong>  If you feel more comfortable with one approach, that\u2019s what you should use in these 50\/50 situations on Test Day. Still, remember that your favored approach may change as you prep.
