Whilst you can carefully select who writes them, what and how they write is somewhat out of your control. One thing you can do, however, is pass on these essential tips \u2013 the collective wisdom of our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/services\/letter-of-recommendation?utm_campaign=Blog&amp;utm_medium=mba_rec_letters&amp;utm_source=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experienced admissions consultants<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 to your recommenders to ensure they cover all the key elements of an outstanding LOR and express themselves compellingly enough to snag you that acceptance letter.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-10-tips-for-writing-mba-letters-of-recommendation\">10 tips for writing MBA letters of recommendation<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Review a copy of the applicant\u2019s personal statement<\/strong>\u00a0or application essays so that your letter of recommendation can dovetail with\u2013<em>not<\/em>\u00a0conflict with or duplicate\u2013the rest of the application.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Ask the applicant to supply you with additional information<\/strong>\u00a0like a resume. These additional sources of information can help you to paint a more thorough picture of the applicant and their strengths beyond your immediate knowledge of said applicant.<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Whenever possible, explain how the applicant compares to others\u00a0<\/strong>you\u2019ve worked with\/supervised\/taught. And, describe your qualifications for comparing the applicant to other applicants. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cI have been teaching for twenty years and have advised approximately 450 students on independent research projects over the last five years.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cI have personally supervised ten interns every summer for the last five years; I have also worked with over two hundred college graduates in my capacity as trainer for Big Bank Corp.\u201d<br \/><br \/><br \/><strong>LISTEN:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/optimize-your-grad-school-application\/\">Optimize Your Graduate School Application: Grades, Scores, Essays, Resume, Activity History, and More &gt;&gt;<\/a><\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Discuss how well you know the applicant<\/strong>. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cI was able to get to know Mr. Doe because he made it a point to attend two of my sections every week when only one was required.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cMs. Smith reported directly to me for two years prior to her well-deserved promotion to the position of Senior in our Big Four Accounting Firm.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Choose two to three positive qualities<\/strong>\u00a0that you have observed in the applicant. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cJane\u2019s writing and interpersonal skills are both very strong.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cThe combination of tenacity, analytical abilities, and good communications skills truly make Mr. Doe unique.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>In discussing those qualities, support your statements with specific instances<\/strong>\u00a0in which he or she demonstrated those attributes. Be as concrete and specific as possible. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cHe is the only student I ever had who came to all my office hours as part of a relentless, and ultimately successful, drive to master financial theory. He was one of just ten percent of the students in the class to receive an A.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cBecause of Jane\u2019s writing skills, I didn\u2019t hesitate to ask her to write a report which was used by our PAC as the basis for a major policy statement. Congressman X eventually used the statement, based on Jane\u2019s sophisticated 20-page analysis of Middle East politics, in lobbying for increased funding.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Try to quantify the student\u2019s strengths<\/strong>\u00a0or rank him or her vis-a-vis other applicants that you have observed. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cHe was in the top 10% of his class.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cShe has the best analytical skills of any person her age that I have ever supervised.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/generic-itis-prevention\/\">Avoid generalities and platitudes.<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Include some mild criticism,\u00a0<\/strong>typically the flip-side of a strength. For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cThe only fault I have encountered in him is his retiring nature. His modesty sometimes hides a young man of remarkable strength and broad interests.\u201d<br \/><br \/><\/li>\r\n<li>\u201cOccasionally, her fortitude and persistence can turn into stubbornness, but usually her good nature and level-headedness prevail.\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Discuss the applicant\u2019s potential in his or her chosen field.<\/strong>\u00a0For example:<br \/><br \/>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\u201cI enthusiastically recommend Mr. Doe to your business school.
