Like this phrase right here<\/em>, modifiers are descriptive phrases often set off by commas adjacent to a noun that they must accurately describe. When a modifier cannot logically describe the word that it is supposed to (e.g. \u201cLeaving her home to go to work, the traffic surprised Lisa\u201d \u2013 that\u2019s illogical, as the traffic is not \u201cleaving her home\u201d), you must eliminate that answer choice. But when it doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s only there to add distance and clutter between portions of the sentence, and can only work against you. Therefore, with a modifier you either use it (to eliminate the sentence) or lose it (ignore it so that you make the sentence shorter).<\/p>\n Consider the example: (A)\tUnlike water, which is complimentary The phrase \u201cwhich is complimentary\u201d is a logical modifier \u2013 it modifies \u201cwater\u201d, and logically so. Accordingly, because you can\u2019t \u201cuse it\u201d to eliminate any answer choices, you should \u201close it\u201d \u2013 read as though it isn\u2019t there, making the answer choices:<\/p>\n (A) Unlike water Now you can use most of these modifiers to eliminate choices A, B, and D \u2013 \u201call passengers\u201d are not comparable to water, so it is illogical to say that \u201cunlike water, all passengers\u2026\u201d. Using these modifier errors, you can narrow down quickly to the correct answer choice, C, which does not use a modifier but rather an introductory clause \u201cunless the drink IS water\u201d \u2013 because the comma-separated portion includes a subject and verb, it\u2019s not a mere modifier but instead its own clause, and is therefore correct.<\/p>\n When you see modifiers on the GMAT, often at the beginning of a sentence, your decision should be clear \u2013 use it or lose it, and either way you\u2019re cutting down on the amount of work you have to do to correctly answer the question.<\/p>\n Ready to sign up for a GMAT course?
