You know you\u2019re a strong candidate for pretty much any top MBA program. There\u2019s just one thing standing in your way\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/guide\/resume-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">your resume<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve had some good jobs\u2014that\u2019s not the problem. The problem is that you\u2019ve had too many of them, very close to each other. You\u2019re afraid that your job switching past may make the adcoms write you off as a commitment-phobe. Of course, you know that\u2019s not the case. But how do you convince the adcoms that each time you left a position, you had good reason for doing so? Even if you choose to use a functional resume format, there\u2019s no way adcoms won\u2019t notice your frequent job switching habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defenses such as, \u201cI got bored,\u201d \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t for me,\u201d or \u201cI hated my boss,\u201d won\u2019t help your case. You\u2019ll need to explain your job-hopping with a bit more detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-valid-reasons-for-switching-jobs\">Valid reasons for switching jobs:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>You moved.<br><\/strong><br>While picking up and moving every few months may require an explanation on its own, it certainly does provide a valid explanation for frequent job changes. Let\u2019s say you had one job during your senior year in Boston, then graduated and moved to D.C. where you landed a second job, and then one of your parents fell ill and you decided to move back home to San Diego to help out, where you got yet another job. While three jobs in the span of a year (or less) is generally frowned upon, your explanation makes sense and doesn\u2019t cast any shadow on your abilities to hold down a job.<br><br><\/li><li><strong>Your schedule changed.<br><\/strong><br>You had been working part-time while you were in school and then, upon graduation switched to a full-time job.<br><br><br><strong>Read:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/how-an-admissions-committee-views-mba-work-experience\/\">How an Admissions Committee Views Your MBA Work Experience >><\/a><\/strong><br><br><\/li><li><strong>You were laid off.<\/strong><br><strong><br><\/strong>You had a job you liked and where you were liked, but were laid off during a recession, as a result of your company being sold to another firm, or other reasons beyond your control, but then found another job that put you back on your desired career path.<br><br><\/li><li><strong>You had trouble finding a good job match.<br><\/strong><br>This explanation could make you appear a bit wishy-washy or unrealistic about your employment prospects.\u00a0Present your case carefully and honestly, explaining that while searching for \u201cthe one,\u201d you tried some positions, but found the vibe wasn\u2019t right; the job wasn\u2019t challenging enough; or you realized the growth potential discussed during your interview really wasn\u2019t in the cards.\u00a0As you explain your choices, make sure to convey that you welcome job commitment, but that you didn\u2019t want to waste time in a role that was destined to be short-term.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/how-to-show-growth-in-your-mba-application\/\">Make sure to show growth and increased responsibility<\/a>&nbsp;either as a motivator for some of the job changes or simply as a constant in your employment journeys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If everything else on your application suggests that you should be accepted to the b-school of your choice, then it\u2019s unlikely that a \u201cbusy\u201d resume will get you dinged\u2026<em>just so long as you explain the multiple positions<\/em>&nbsp;and convince the adcoms that you are, in fact, an extremely committed person who plans to find a job post-graduation that you\u2019ll accept and keep for the long haul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our expert Accepted consultants can help you convey your job history and write about it in the most compelling way possible.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/mba\/services\/application-packages\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Work one-on-one with your personal advisor to create an MBA application that will get you ACCEPTED\u2026despite a job-hopping past<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reports.accepted.com\/mba\/guide\/importance-of-work-experience-when-applying-for-your-mba\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.accepted.com\/hubfs\/hub_generated\/resized\/7e34ecb5-9410-4e59-9484-a8184057df07.jpeg\" alt=\"Find Out How Your Work Experience Can Help You Get Accepted to Your Top Choice MBA Program!\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By Judy Gruen, former Accepted admissions consultant.
