It removed choice from the essays and is now requiring three essays as well as providing an optional question. Last year it required two essays with one optional, but you had a choice of topics in responding to the second question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ready to get to work on your CBS application? Read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>CBS application essay tips<\/li><li>CBS application deadlines<\/li><li>CBS class profile<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"essay_tips\">Columbia Business School application essay tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicants must complete one short answer question and three essays (source:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academics.gsb.columbia.edu\/mba\/admissions\/application-requirements#5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBS website<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\"><strong>Short Answer Question:<\/strong>&nbsp;What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal?&nbsp;<em>(50 characters)<\/em><br><br>Examples of possible responses:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Work in business development for a media company<\/li><li>Join a strategy consulting firm<\/li><li>Launch a data-management start-up<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that this has a&nbsp;<em>character<\/em>&nbsp;(not word) limit.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/short-and-sweet-tips-for-writing-mini-mba-essays-2\/\">Your response must be significantly shorter than a tweet.<\/a>&nbsp;What do you want to do professionally and in which industry immediately after earning your MBA?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warning: This question is not asking about your intended area of study while in business school or a non-professional goal or even a long-term goal. And the subject in your response is assumed to be you.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/stay-within-essay-word-limits-reducing-verbal-verbosity\/\">No need to waste characters<\/a>&nbsp;by including \u201cI\u201d or \u201cI plan to\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Succinctly define your goal in terms of function (what you want to do) and the industry (or type of company) in which you want to do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-columbia-business-school-essay-1\">Columbia Business School Essay #1<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next three to five years and what is your long-term dream job?&nbsp;<em>(500 words)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Columbia adcom readers must really like the answers they get to this question, because it\u2019s back this year, with one tiny change, and has been a part of CBS\u2019 application for the last several years. (The change: CBS removed \u201cin your imagination\u201d which used to precede \u201cwould be your long-term dream job?\u201d)<br><br>CBS wants you to focus on your career goals not immediately after graduation, as in the short-answer question, but in the medium- and long-term. They want to see how you believe your career will develop after that first post-MBA job. This question&nbsp;<em>does not<\/em>&nbsp;ask you how CBS will help you achieve your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer this question, realize that the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/how-much-should-i-draw-on-my-cv-resume-in-my-sop\/\">readers already know what\u2019s in your resume<\/a>. Don\u2019t repeat \u201cyour career path to date.\u201d That\u2019s a waste of valuable essay real estate) and means you\u2019re neither telling them anything new nor answering their question. Instead, tell them what you want to do three to five years into the future, which should build on your first post-MBA job. You can focus on the Philips Pathway for Inclusive Leadership, which CBS provides as an example in its question and which was the subject of one question last year. Or you can focus on other programs that are distinctive to Columbia, like its Executives in Residence program, or the ability to have internships at the many top corporations as well as young start-ups in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Columbia Business School Essay #3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">Tell us about your favorite book, movie or song and why it resonates with you.&nbsp;<em>(250 words)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Choose one book, movie, or song and discuss why you love it. You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.accepted.com\/writing-an-opening-lead-that-pops\/\">start with a key scene or phrase<\/a>&nbsp;and provide 2-3 reasons that makes this piece so meaningful to you such that it earns the title of your favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a get-to-know-you question \u2013 and not the professional you, but the fun, off-the-job, engaged, and engaging you. It\u2019s a chance for them to \u201chang out\u201d with you in a more casual setting.<br><br>Realize that&nbsp;<em>why<\/em>&nbsp;you choose a book, movie, or song as your favorite is far more important than&nbsp;<em>what<\/em>&nbsp;you choose.<br><br>This essay is an opportunity for you to show a different side of you. Use it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-columbia-business-school-optional-essay\">Columbia Business School optional essay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-background-color has-background\">Is there any further information that you wish to provide the Admissions Committee? If so, use this space to provide an explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or your personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay. You may submit bullet points.&nbsp;<em>(maximum 500 words)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This question has also changed and is more restrictive than Columbia\u2019s optional essay last year. This essay is now specifically for you to \u201caddress areas of concern.\u201d If you don\u2019t have areas of concern, don\u2019t write the essay. However, if you had a dip in grades, a period of unemployment, or some other issue that you want to address, do so here. You don\u2019t want the admissions committee guessing why something is the way it is and coming to the wrong conclusion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t even think of using this essay as a grand finale or wrap up.
