These questions present an argument, and then ask test-takers to identify the answer choice that, if true, would best strengthen or weaken that argument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But before we get too deep into specifics, let's take a step back and review the basics.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>What are arguments comprised of exactly?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/JB-slide-1.bmp\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/JB-slide-11.bmp\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-slide-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12526      aligncenter\" title=\"jb slide 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-slide-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"503\" height=\"601\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The answer choices on a GMAT CR question might strengthen or weaken the argument in a number of ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a few basic methods:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jb-slide-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12511    aligncenter\" title=\"Jb slide 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Jb-slide-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"388\" \/><\/a><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Let's take a look at an example: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-slide-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12512      aligncenter\" title=\"jb slide 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-slide-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"507\" height=\"552\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now that we've identified the evidence, assumption, and conclusion, there are a variety of ways we can strengthen or weaken the assumptions in this argument. We can add new details, invoke general principles, or directly contradict the argument\u2019s unstated premises.<\/p>\n<p>Compare the following statements to the passage to see how each one works to strengthen or weaken the argument:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-slide-4.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-new-slide.bmp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12538  aligncenter\" title=\"jb new slide\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/jb-new-slide.bmp\" alt=\"\" width=\"509\" height=\"604\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In general, <strong>watch out for irrelevant or opposite answer choices<\/strong>. These are particularly common for strengthen \/ weaken questions. In the examples below, the strengthener implies that the museum will not get more visitors from its reduced fares while the weakener is irrelevant to the argument.
