(Check out our other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/tag\/gmat-reading-vs-everyday-reading\">GMAT Reading vs. Everyday Reading <\/a>posts for more.)<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to enhance your GMAT Reading Comprehension skills, the best thing you can do for yourself is to understand what exactly makes GMAT passages tricky and develop strategies for processing complex information, so that you can attack the questions efficiently.<\/p>\n<p>What makes GMAT passages feel so long?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-1.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13439\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language Image 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What makes GMAT passages such a pain to read?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-2.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13442\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language Image 2\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-21.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe combination of these elements -- modifiers, nominalizations (the use of a verb, adjective, or adverb as the head of a noun phrase), and adjective\/noun combinations -- make GMAT passages convoluted and hard to read. These are all part of the test-makers' master plan to confuse you.<\/p>\n<p>Don't let it work! Instead, change your GMAT strategy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-3.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13445\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language Image 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe more aware of these nominalizations and adjective\/noun combinations you are, the easier it will be for you to ignore them while reading and find the passage's main idea.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see how this works in action. Take a look at this passage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-image-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13446\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language image 4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-image-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"346\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There's a lot of intimidating vocabulary in there, but if you don\u2019t let it bother you, the passage is far less challenging. So what can we do to master a passage with tough vocabulary?<a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-5.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-5.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/untitled.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/untitled1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13454\" title=\"untitled\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/untitled1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"307\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nHere's a list of \"logic words\" with which to familiarize yourself. These words might also help you on the Critical Reasoning and AWA sections of the GMAT!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-6.jpg\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-51.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13450\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language Image 5\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-51.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also familiarize yourself with \"business words\". These words will come in handy for the rest of your career!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-61.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-13449\" title=\"GMAT Reading-Language Image 6\" src=\"https:\/\/www.knewton.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/GMAT-Reading-Language-Image-61.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"423\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the end, your performance on the Reading Comprehension section of the GMAT is heavily dependent on your perception of the exam.
