y of the 1500 participated while z participated but were not from town A. So the thing to note is that the overlap of "participated" and "town A" is (y - z).

We need to find neither.

Total = n(Participated) + n(Town A) - n(Both) + Neither
1500 = y + x - (y - z) + Neither
Neither = 1500 - x - z
