This is how I solved. Instead of using variables, I've used numbers to solve. Hope it helps.

Relative speed * time = distance
(3r/2 - r) t = r
t= 2hours

So, the distance travelled by Paul is 3r/2 per hour.. so in two hours that 6r/2 which is 3r.
