Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years ago, The Mercury’s circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to get more people to read The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The Bugle, at least until circulation increases to former levels. The increased circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy advertising space in the paper. The publisher of The Mercury suggests decreasing the price of the Mercury because he believes that the Mercury’s circulation declined due to lower price of the competing newspaper, The Bugle. The publisher’s assumption that by just decreasing the price, circulation will increase which in turn will get more advertisers, is a flawed one and does not take several other factors into account which might have resulted in decline in circulation and less advertisers.
First, the publisher suggests that by just decreasing the price he will be able to increase the circulation of the newspaper. He does not take into account other possible reasons which could have resulted in the decline of the newspaper. One could argue that the circulation decline happened due to decrease in content quality and unless the quality improves the newspaper will not get more readers. Moreover, another reason behind the decline in readership in last five years could be due to decline in readership for all existing newspapers.
The publisher further suggests that if the readership increases they will be able to attract advertiser, which itself is a flawed reasoning as it assumes advertiser only consider circulation as a matrix to decide which newspaper to advertise with. Although circulation is an important matrix driving advertisers’ decision but one should also consider the cost of advertising for the newspaper which if too high, will dissuade the advertisers. Another factor which would drive advertisers’ decision is the kind of readers reading the newspaper as an advertiser targeting teens will not give an advertisement to a newspaper read majorly by old people.
The argument given by the publisher to increase circulation and advertisers is very weak and the publisher needs to make sure there are no other reasons driving the decline in sales. While a decrease in price can help to increase the circulation slightly, but without getting answers to the reasons discussed earlier there is no guarantee that the mercury circulation can reach its previous level and businesses will be confident to advertise with the mercury.
