Hello Club,

Can you please provide me with some simple approaches to solve these problems. I got both answers correct by narrowing down the choices, but I want to be solid in my math understanding. I appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you!

14. The figure above represents a square plot measuring x feet on a side. The plot consists of a rectangular garden, 48 square feet in area, surrounded by a walk that is 3 feet wide on two opposite sides and 2 feet wide on the other two sides. What is the value of x?

a. 8
b. 10
c. 12
d. 16
e. 18

16. In a certain country 55 percent of women are in the labor force and these women comprise 40% of the labor force. If the number of men in the labor force is 75 million, how many million women are in the labor force?

a. 50.00
b. 56.25
c. 68.75
d. 112.50
e. 125.00

No of men in labour force = 75m
Men compromise 60% of labour force
So number of women in labour force = 40/60*75m = 50m

You need to provide the figure for Q1

14. The figure above represents a square plot measuring x feet on a side. The plot consists of a rectangular garden, 48 square feet in area, surrounded by a walk that is 3 feet wide on two opposite sides and 2 feet wide on the other two sides. What is the value of x?

a. 8
b. 10
c. 12
d. 16
e. 18

Guess it's a square with a side of x and rectangle with area 48 inside it.

The length of the rectangular garden would be $$x-2*2$$ and the width would be $$x-2*3$$ --> $$area=(x-4)(x-6)=48$$ --> $$x^2-10x-24=0$$ --> $$x=12$$ or $$x=-2$$ (not a valid solution).

16. In a certain country 55 percent of women are in the labor force and these women comprise 40% of the labor force. If the number of men in the labor force is 75 million, how many million women are in the labor force?

a. 50.00
b. 56.25
c. 68.75
d. 112.50
e. 125.00

As 40% of the labor force are women then 60% of labor force are men, so 75m comprise 60% of the labor force --> total labor force $$\frac{75}{0.6}=125$$ so there are $$125*0.4=50$$ million women.
