2018 PhD (Marketing) in Montreal [#permalink]
Hi, I need an evaluation for my chances in B-schools in Montreal. McGill, Concordia & HEC. I have a decent profile

Bachelor's in double maths & physics

MBA marketing. 83%

MPhil Consumer Behaviour 3.94/4.0

PhD coursework 3.75/4.0

Two publications from my mphil thesis, two international conference presentations, another paper under review in an Impact factor journal, a Best research paper award from a conference in Malaysia, Silver medal for academic excellence for Masters. 6 years market research/social issues research experience.

New Quebec resident. Adequately fluent in French. Strong LoRs.

However, having said all of this, I have a really really crappy GMAT. 580 (Q39, V 31)

I do have a reason for this disaster, despite a strong academic background (I am enrolled in a PhD program in my home country Pakistan. I've completed the coursework and cleared the comprehensive exam. But before proceeding further on the thesis proposal, we had to shift to Quebec. We actually had to prepone our departure by a year, so I only had about 25 days to decide to appear in gmat so that I could make the application deadline for Fall 2018 for a new phD in a world class school. I had NEVER considered sitting for Gmat previously, didn't even know honestly the format etc of the exam. So I literally went from 0 prep/knowledge to 580 in under a month. This is an ego satisfying score for me, that I could pull off in 25 days. However the adcoms don't care about any sob stories :)

So, moral of this looooong story, do I have any chance of admission in the three schools I mentioned earlier? I've already applied, but if gmat is the gate keeper, I don't suppose I stand a chance.

Comments please.

I think you have a chance. Of course, chances for good PhD programs are usually very small even for extremely good applicants. But your profile is probably strong enough to make them curious about you, and if you explained your situation and your LoR can back you up, I think it is possible.

Hmmm. Thank you for your input. I actually had not explained the reason in my personal statement. I thought perhaps it would look like I'm trying to make excuses for a bad score. But after your post, I just added a couple of lines in my personal statement, just mentioning the circumstances. Let's see how it turns out.
Thanks for taking the time out.
