27/36 correct - V33 - what the actual.......?

Hi,

I took this mock exactly 3 months ago (see my signature). I hope to get experimental RC questions

Today's breakdown is 2 SC wrong, 1 CR wrong, 6 RC wrong..

How do I avoid 3 RCs in the first 10 questions.... Gosh, GMAT is so useless and tells nothing about the candidate! I've barely slept for the last 3 months (15-hour work days + GMAT) and some RC questions keeps me away from my dream score, that's so fkd up.

Guys, you were right that I should stop worrying about the algorithm itself.
I bought exams 3 & 4 today. Got an unexpected 710 (Q50,V35) !!! V35 with 15 incorrect (not kidding)!!! I never scored that high until now. At the middle of the CAT I thought it had been going very bad......... but it wasn't.

Let me share my insights on this.

For scoring 700 and above, you need to get the easy medium questions right as GMAT test is adaptive in nature. Get high accuracy in first 10-15 questions, so that GMAT starts serving you the real tough ones, but you have just won half the battle. Now get a streak of questions right and make GMAT believe that you’ve the capability to answer tough questions. Bingo! You’ve won the battle. If you don’t answer the hard questions correctly, you might probably end up struggling to score 700+. Also, it’s important to note that accuracy isn’t the most important thing. You can have an overall accuracy of 80% and still have a below 700 score.

What matters is Skill level for which you need to have a clear understanding of how the GMAT algorithm works. Here’s a video which might help you understand better:

Umm that's not how gmat scoring algorithm works. It seems by your score that you must have gotten some pretty basic(400-500) lvl questions wrong.
That's what cost you such a high penalty.The first 10 questions are v important I would say(according to research) so a bad performance there can be pretty damn hard to overturn.
Was this your first attempt on this mock ?
PS some 9-10 questions are experimental questions so they don't count to your final score even if you get them right.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I understand your confusion about your score considering you have answered 17 questions correctly in a row. However, I noticed that you have answered 6 questions incorrect in the first 10 questions itself. Answering those many questions incorrect in the first 10 questions can probably hurt a test taker's score more than answering the same number of questions incorrectly say in the last 10 questions. As you can see, looking through my posts, I've always been bad at RC. This time, exam threw at me 3 passages one after one; first 10 questions were RC. Seriously, if that's the case on the real exam, I'm immediately out and I'm getting ready for the re-take. I thought I've mastered the GMAT enough to get the 720+ score; it turns out that didn't because I can't read :D

I really think (hope) that the actual GMAT won't line 3 RC passages up right at the beginning of the test.

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. First off, your GMAT score is based on not only the number of questions you answer correct/incorrect, but also the difficulty of those questions, among other things. Additionally, as anishraina has mentioned, it’s quite possible that you got some very easy questions wrong that greatly pulled down your verbal score.

Honestly, rather than spending time worrying about the GMAC algorithm, you really should focus on the things you can control, and the number one thing you can control is getting better at the GMAT. If you get to a point at which you can dominate the GMAT, the specifics of the scoring algorithm won't matter because you will have the skills that you need to get an amazing score, right?

Hi Scott. I'm too short on time to think about further improvement. I'm so exhausted.. I work in investment banking industry (M&A). The 15-hour work days made me HATE the GMAT. I'm so tired of studying for GMAT! I've already scheduled my GMAT on 5/11/2018.

At the end of the day I think I've made a decent progress: from Q26 to Q50; from V20 to V33. I'm happy. Will surely keep you updated how it goes on the real test. I'm pretty sure I'll make it to the university of my dreams and that's all that counts for me.

I have seen people got V25 with 8 mistakes / v28 with 6 / v29 with 14 / V 32with 6/ V40 with 8 in real tests

Some people make tons of mistakes in the first two , but still get hard questions in later sections ... just don’t understand how this thing really works

It’s kinda sad that when you answer a couple of easy questions wrong in the very beginning , it’s almost impossible to come back , unless you are truly good with verbal ( 40+ on average ) .

Hello, I am facing the same issue, I got 10 incorrct and scored V31, and there is just 1 wrong in the first 10.
next 10 there is 5 wrong. next 10 just 1 wrong and next 6..3 wrong.
I do not understand the algoritham.

I got V33 21 correct and Q40 with 11 correct.

Estimating what a score should be based on correct vs. incorrect percentages has some issues given the algorithm. Looking at the ESRs people may publicly post may provide some helpful insight, though.
