Re: 2nd GMAT Attempt:500 (Q33 V28) Extremely Confused/Frustrated [#permalink]

I did two GMATprep tests; both of which gave me completely different results 530 and 560. During both tests I felt somewhat anxious during the tests and dismissed my math score (around 33-35) as not a true reflection of my abilities.

When I look at my scores, i'm really confused for the following reasons:
1) I'm a native english speaker and feel verbal is my strength; on MGMAT tests, OG questions I can answer SC, CR and RC questions in good time and score nearly perfect in every scenario.

2) Quant has always been a weakness of mine and I've painstakingly worked to improve it. Although I have improved, the real scores never seem to mimic the scores I achieve on practice tests or how I feel about practice questions.

In terms of options/next steps:
- I cannot afford tutoring
- I'm extremely self-motivated and know I can (and have) allocate dedicated time to GMAT studying
- I feel I can do this on my own - but I just need some direction as to what I can do next.

I feel confused because my practice scores never seem to match my real scores. Before I attempt it for the 3rd time, I'd really like to be confident about my approach. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

I don't think there is any reason to be confused. Your GMAT prep test scores were in the same range as the actual GMAT score. The actual GMAT score is generally +-50 points around the GMAT prep test score (generally -ve due to the stress factor). GMAT prep test is the most accurate indicator of your expected score range. It is hard to explain when people get -100 points of their prep test result but +- 50 points is normal. There is no need to be frustrated. I think it is just a matter of misplaced expectations.

The Quant score you get in GMAT prep test may not be a true reflection of your abilities but to truly convert your abilities into a score, you need to polish your skills. You have certainly shown improvement in your Quant skills but you need to do more. It is not very hard to go from Q33 to Q43. I think you still need to work on your basics and need to understand exactly why we use the methods we do. Quant is absolutely reasoning based. Try to understand the concepts really well. The higher level questions are a play on the same basic concepts. Take a cue from your GMAT prep test result - check out the areas you are weak in and work on those. You don't need to work in detail on coordinate geometry and combinatorics and probability if your score target is 650+ but it is still a good idea to be comfortable with the basics of these topics.

For Verbal, again I think some work on basics is required. You could be great in a language and still not do that well on a particular question type in that language. CR is not about English but about reasoning. RC is a combination of language and reasoning skills. Till a few yrs back, SC tested your language skills to a large extent but the format is changing and is getting more reasoning based (the sentence should not only be grammatically correct but also make sense. Go through some books that tell you how to deal with these various question types.

It is not essential to take tutoring to do well. It is just faster and easier if someone tells you why things are done the way they are done. You can certainly figure them out on your own with some research. If you can allocate some serious time to your GMAT preparation, you should be able to see results. I would suggest you to work on your basics first and then practice. You will certainly see improvement.

Karishma,

That was both humbling and very informative. Thank you for this.

You are right though, I've been doing some analysis and looking at my scores not including the MGMAT tests and just the GMATPrep tests - the quant and verbal scores are consistent; with a high point of Q35 and V35.

I will make the third time count.

Thank you
