the answer can be reached by eliminating all the choices where the comparison is faulty...
A. 3.7 million people collected unemployment benefits in the week that ended November 17, the most recent period for which figures are available and 60,000 more than the previous week.
B. 3.7 million people collected unemployment benefits in the week that ended November 17, the most recent period for which figures are available, which was 60,000 more than the previous week.

Official Explanation



Answer E. This problem focuses almost entirely on proper comparisons, as the 60,000 more figure must properly connote that the 3.7 million figure is 60,000 more than the previous week's figure. Choices A, B, C, and D all compare 60,000 to the previous week itself, not the figure from that week. Only choice E compares figure to figure, so E must be correct.

Adding to the above explanation of why C is incorrect, if the week is yet to end on <xyz> date, the data comparing to figures from last "week" couldn't have been reported because meaning wise, we're comparing data from 2 weeks here, not 1 week v/s some days short of a week (since the week is yet to end , from this statement) . And, you cant call the week "recent" if it hasn't ended yet :idea:

Can someone explain why C is wrong?

True, but what you should also be looking here is the proximity of the phrase "60,000 more than the previous week." with the other number (3.7 million people).
Only two choices present that, either C or E.

And then the answer choice C presents the comparison incorrectly - 60,000 more than the previous week.
We are not comparing the number 60,000 with the week, rather we should be comparing it with the other number (or figure in other words).

So answer choice E.

you are correct but you will be able to see the usage in non underlined potion on many occasions.
So we can take that the GMAC is not averse ti its use, if placed correctly

C violates the original meaning referring to period that "ends", when E refers precisely

Here "60,000 more than the previous week is misplaced. it should modify people
So A is wrong.
Similarly options B and D are also wrong

C and E seems correct.
but in option C " 60,000 more than the previous week" means 60,000 is something more the previous week or 60,000 people is more than previous week.
Hence C is wrong
Option E corrects the error by chaning week to week's figure
Hence E is the correct answer

E is the correct answer

This is what statement means to say:

- 3.7 million people collected unemployment benefits in the week that ended November 17
- Week ending with November 17 is the most recent period for which figures (number of people who collected unemployment benefits) are available
- This number is greater by 60000

A are out as the statement after comma and starting after 'and' does not relate in any way grammatically to sentence before comma
B, C compares figures with week
D repeats the mistake of B
