Re: 30 days before the core starts [#permalink]
International students are only allowed to enter to the US with Visa F1 status 30 days prior to the day issued on I-20.

What 30-day-rule are you talking about?[/quote]

Do custom officers understand this? Or do you have to obey strictly "30 -day- rule"? - Many thanks - GC

My suggestion: never assume that anyone will understand anything. Go trictly by the rules and leave nothing to interpretation. Otherwise you are running risks.

As 3underscore said, another option is to enter the country on a turist / business visa (typically a B1), then leave the country and re-enter once the F1 is valid. But you'll need to leave the country, so what's the point, right?

I'm not sure if you can have another type of visa while you're holding one.
But Pelihu is right: stick with the rule.

I believe you will enter on a tourist visa, and then be expected to leave the US and return to move onto the student visa within the dates it applies.

Canada is a popular option.

Canadian immigration authorities may also require a visa, depending on which country the applicant is coming from.

I'd wait for a later flight and save the hassel. For all we know, the terrorist alert level could be raised to "critical" again between now and July, which will only further complicate the issue.

I'm also an international student, and I will be sticking to their rule. No point trying to test the system. (And I'm from a little country that is on a pretty friendly term with the US).

Jeez people. This is US immigration we are talking about. Rule bending is not something they engage in!
