The convenient number in percentage problems is 100
men=60; women=40
French speaking employees=40
men(F)=36; women(F)=4
women(NF)=36
Therefore, among women employees 90% do not speak French
In the company, 36% of women employees do not speak French.

Bunuel-quick doubt-Should the question not be what % of the women and NOT what is the % of the women in the company. In the first case , answer should be 90% and in the second case answer should be 36/100=36%

The test "% of the women" clearly mentions that the Base of percentage calculation needs to be taken as total Women.

Your interpretation seems to be flawed here because both the languages mean the same thing.

"of" defines what needs to be taken as base of percentage calculation.

The answer is D. See the attached image. Granted this question is fairly easy, but it's important to understand the following:

1. What is the trap here? The GMAC is testing whether you read the question correctly.
Choice A: % of company who don't speak French
Choice B: % of women who speak French

Tip: Always review the question to make sure you are answering the correct question. You cannot afford to beat yourself.

Hi =,

I think both the things don't mean the same thing. What is the % of women in the company means =% of women out of all the employees
And what % of women means reqd number as a percentage of women.

Set up a tiny 3x3 table:

French//No French//Total
Men 36//24//60
Women 4//36//40
Total 40//60/100

So you know that out of 40 women exactly 36 do not speak french. Answer D = 90%

Ans: D

Let total no. of employees in the company be 100

--> 60 Male & 40 Female
------>60% of 60 men speak french = 36 male
--> 40% of 100 ppl speak french = 40 ppl (both male+female)
------>Thus reaming 4 ppl who speak french are Female
Out of 40 Female -- 36 do not speak french.
Thus 90%(\(\frac{36}{40}\) * 100) of Female do not speak french

Re: 60% of the employees of a company are men. 60% of the men in the compa [#permalink]
I tried solving this question multiple ways and I couldn't figure out where I was going wrong. It turns out, I was getting the right answer each time but it seemed to me that the question was asking what percentage of the Total employees that are women do not speak French. The wording of the question is definitely confusing. Maybe it needed to be worded as "of the women in the company, what percentage do not speak French" (or something along those lines) Bunuel
