643. Since 1970 the number of Blacks elected to state and federal offices in the United States has multiplied nearly four times.
(A) has multiplied nearly four times - correct IMO (since then it has multiplied .... )
(B) has almost quadrupled (incorrect - for eg., when we say he almost reached, means he has not reached at all; )
(C) has almost multiplied by four - same as B, multiplied should come before and almost should be attached to four not multiplied)
(D) is almost four times as great - incorrect ;compare "since 1970 it is doubled" to "since 1970 it has doubled", the sentence intends to mean something changed from 1970 so "has" is correct, is would be it has been the nearly four times since 1970... and there wouldn't be any comparison - meaningless
(E) is nearly fourfold what it was - same as D

IMO A

has quadrupled is correct. replace "quadrupled" with "double" AND "four times" with "two times"

A, C.. awkward.

My pick is B.

(A) has multiplied nearly four times
(C) has almost multiplied by four
(D) is almost four times as great
(E) is nearly fourfold what it was

First, we have two/three split based on the use of has VS is. Because we are talking about "Since 1970" this is an action that has started in the past, but continues on into the present:

Therefore, it must be has and NOT is. (D) and (E) are out.

The subject here is "the number", we can cross everything else out:

(A) "the number..." has multiplied nearly four times
(B) "the number..." has almost quadrupled
(C) "the number..." has almost multiplied by four

So the next split we have is the use of multiplied VS quadruple.

The use of "the number" has multiplied is awkward because it requires you to pair with with the number it is multiplied with (ie "four" or "four times").

The use of "the number..." has almost quadrupled is clear and concise.

This is a 3 vs 2 split first , we have to choose among A,B or C because "Since" and the structure shows we have to use present prefect , then
A) Multiplied nearly four times : misleads by saying the number has multipled nearly 4 times ie 4 times in the past (4 diff occasions )

C) it is very awkward: B is the concise one , and most clear.... so choose B

“multiplied” is transitive verb and require a object. Hence A and C are out.
“great” cannot be used to convey “increase in number”. Hence D is out
“nearly” is adverb and cannot modify “fourfold”. Hence E is out.

“quadrupled” is a noun and is connecting directly another noun “the number of…”. Hence the choice is B

I have a feeling that "multiply" can be used only where a subject is capable of multiplication . For eg , Bacterias multiply(through reproduction) . Therefore in this case , the number(the subject and very much incapable of multiplying by itself) gets quadrupled.
Can someone evaluate my reasoning...???

(A) has multiplied nearly four times
(C) has almost multiplied by four
(D) is almost four times as great
(E) is nearly fourfold what it was

What is wrong with Option "A" here. Why Option B is preferred over A.

Option (A) can be rejected as it is verbose....
