Considering GMAT score only (assume the rest of my profile is competitive), should I take what I've got and apply, or seriously consider a retake? Note: I'm not someone who is going to score 750, and feel 650 is a good indicator of where I stand with respect to the verbal and quantitative skills tested on the GMAT. A retake will most probably yield a score of 650 plus/minus 40.

Other aspects of a candidate's profile held constant, is a 650 a reach wrt UNC-Chapel Hill?

If you're an "average" applicant in all other regards, it'll be a reach.

If you can't or won't retake, apply as early as possible - maybe even ED. I applied late and got waitlisted with a 680. I know of more than a few people that were waitlisted with 700+ GMAT scores. You're looking at a score that's 40 points below their mean, so the rest of your app needs to be superlative, not just "good."

I'd retake if I were you.
