I'm not sure why you've written off any schools as unattainable. It sounds like you have a really strong application. Your GMAT is "below average," but it's not likely to be the deciding factor on your admission. A stronger GMAT could help your case, but you should only retake if you believe that you can increase your score by more than 30 points.

Thanks for all of the advice!

I realized I should only re-take the GMAT if I was confident I could increase my score by a wide margin, so I spent the last month studying my heart out. It paid off. I took the test again yesterday and scored a 740 (Q:49, V:42)!!

I'm just a little discouraged by the reply I got from "AlexMBAApply" in the admission consultants forum. He basically implied there was nothing spectacular about my profile, there was no advantage to being a female in finance, and that my chance of getting in to Harvard / Wharton / Columbia would come down to luck. I'm having a really hard time assessing where I would have a good chance of getting in. Is there such thing as a safety school in the Top 10? 15?

surely 690 is a good score since B schools always look for versatility in many areas rather than take a gmat score to be the only strong point. :-D
