Well I just got back from the test center and I don't feel very good. My target is UCLA. My practice scores were in the upper 700's. Take a look at the attached file for my studying schedule and a record of all my practice scores.

8/8/09 - GMAT Prep 2 (1st try) - 770
8/15/09 - GMAT Prep 1 (2nd try) - 750 (First try was two months prior to this)
8/22/09 - GMAT Prep 2 (2nd try) - 770
8/29/09 - GMAT Prep 1 (3rd try) - 760
8/30/09 - GMAT Prep 2 (3rd try) - 770 (Q50, V47 - this is almost 780)

So what do I do? Should I take it again? I think my studying period was too long. I should have studied about 8 or 9 weeks instead of 12. Man, this sucks.

I am sorry to hear that your disspointed, its always sad to see such scores after hardwork and 120 days of prep. If you are from the large application pool and if your application is not strong enough then 710 would not be sufficient for UCLA, else 710 is good and you should concentrate onf your apps. But if you think another 15 days of hard core prep can push your score to 740+ then go for it.

Congrats for a good score!!
If you feel that you really messed up in the exam and still scored 710 then go for another try otherwise invest that extra time in sprucing up your application. Let this unhappy feeling sink in and then decide with a cool head which path would be best. I believe till then you will have lots of valuable suggestions to pick from.

By the way 710 is a great score. Many people would take it any day but everything is relative. Enjoy your long weekend!!

Hey Topher - sorry to hear about the experience. Your practice scores rock!

You can see Pathfinder's post there too - he got 720 first time, felt it was too low for his skill and level, studied for a year and at the end got 690. The story has a happy ending - he is at Wharton right now. I think you are Ok with 710.

Well it looks like I'm not going to take it again. I want to make R1 for UCLA and the deadline to take the GMAT is 9/30/09. Considering it's 09/04/09 and you can only take the exam once a month, I need to go with it. The average score at UCLA for c/o 2010 was 711. But the only thing is I wanted to make sure I got a top GMAT score because I have a less than stellar undergrad GPA.

I don't know what happened today. The first time I took GMAT Prep 2 a few weeks ago I got 770. This score is 60 points below that! Well, I have to shake it off. Thanks for the input.

Hey topher I'm sorry!

Did you find the actual test more difficult than GMATPrep?
What explanation do you have to that lack of correlation between the prep cats and the actual test?

saruba,

I thought GMAT prep and the actual test were similar in content and style (obviously). I guess I did feel a little nervous since the actual test day is the real deal and it's natural to feel a little nervous. But I'm just not sure why my performance was sub-par. During the test I felt fine and I thought I was doing as well as I did on home exams. There were times when I was taking my home exams and I thought I did poorly but out popped a 750 or 760. I felt my performance today was the same as those tests.

There is as much as 40 points of variance built into GMAT and the other 20 must have been just stress, so unfortunately this is a possible outcome.

If something happens with UCLA, you can always retake after taking another month to prep.

Topher,

Don't forget you always have the optional essay. Take advantage of it to provide the adcom why you are a viable candidate with your GPA and GMAT score.

your score is good enough. i got a similar score. focusing on essays can be more worthwhile after you are over 700. having a coherent presentation with a convincing theme may do us more good than the gmat score.

I just re-took the exam again yesterday and got the exact same score! I guess my 99th %ile dream just wasn't meant to be. I am going with 710 and starting on my apps. I hope to get two of them done by the end of October. Good luck all.

P.S. I ended up getting 6.0 AWA. For those of you wondering, AWA is pretty easy, and all you need to do is follow the guidelines in chineseburned's AWA guide.

topher,

that's still a great score, with a good demonstration that you have a strong quant background! With a solid application, i'm sure you would be competitive at any school.

hey topher,

Sorry to hear you did not get a big increase in your score. I took the GMAT today and didn't get the score I wanted so I understand your disappointment. Still, as others have said here, 710 is a very good score. Good luck on the rest of your application!
