(A) a previous estimation and the savings rate slightly higher
Initially PREVIOUS ESIMATION sounds ok but not better than PREVIOUSLY ESTIMATED
because one might ask PREVIOUS ESTIMATION "of what" but the same problem doesnot exist in PREVIOUSLY ESTIMATED.
THAT is needed with savings rate for parallelsim
(B) a previous estimation and with a slightly higher savings rate
same as above
(C) a previous estimate and that the savings rate is slightly higher
PREVIOS ESTIAMTE usage is suspect as explained in A
SAVINGS RATE is HIGHER: should be was to maintain TENSE parallesm
(D) previously estimated and a slightly higher savings rate
THAT is missing with SAVINGS RATE
(E) previously estimated and that the savings rate was slightly higher
perfect

Hi Ayrish,

This is essentially a parallelism problem. The correct form should be:

... that X was.... that Y was...

Only answer E fulfills this requirement.

Answer A uses "a previous estimation," which has an adjective and noun. This does not flow in parallel to the second half of the sentence "slightly higher," which uses an adverb and adjective.

Just remember that parallelism in its most basic form matches noun for noun, verb for verb... etc.

HTH!

What is the source of this question? Trickiest today.

The report | ....... | showed that second-quarter inflation "was" somewhat lower than | [a previous estimate] / [previously estimated] | and that the savings rate | [is] / [was] slightly higher.

Because of occurrence of "was" after the first "that", a "was" is needed after the second "that" as well. All other options cannot stand by this.

Got it wrong myself and prephrased the answer in my mind conveniently to C actually.

Parallel construction

The report [strike]on the gross national product—the nation’s total production of goods and services—[/strike] showed that second-quarter inflation was somewhat lower than previously estimated and that the savings rate was slightly higher

(A) a previous estimation and the savings rate slightly higher
(B) a previous estimation and with a slightly higher savings rate
(C) a previous estimate and that the savings rate is slightly higher Shows parallel construction but doesn't maintain the verb tense.
(D) previously estimated and a slightly higher savings rate
(E) previously estimated and that the savings rate was slightly higher Winner
