E.

You must pay attention to the past tense and notice how the sentence talks about "centuries ago."

Using "have developed" is improper since that would refer to current, so A & B are out. "Of the" I believe is an idiom problem, so C & D are out.

E is left as its concise and refers to past tense.

'E' should be the answer for correctly using the past tense.
