A candy wholesaler needs to quickly sell some candy bars that are nearing their expiration date, so he reduced the price of the candy bars. By what percent did he reduce the price of the candy bars?

(1) The price of a candy bar was reduced by 36 cents.

(2) If a candy retailer purchases a case of 144 candy bars from the wholesaler, she will save $51.84 as a result of the price reduction. However to explain my answer I was typing my explanation ... and realized that the OA is right. So sorry for adding another question to the thread ... no help needed as such. _________________ Please give me kudos, if you like the above post. Thanks. But hwen you solve it, it would be: 144x - 144x +144*36 = 5184 you would notice here that the x variable is getting cancellend. Hence, you would never be able to find out X!! both the statements reveal the same thing... I hope its clear now. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider KUDOS if you like my post! _________________ Appreciation in KUDOS please! Say P percent…what is P?  X*p/100 =X-Y  P=(X-Y)/X percent Hence to answer this qtn: we need to know both X and Y OR both X-Y and X (which will in a way give Y too) Stmnt1: says X-Y = 36 NOT suff. As no info abt X to determine P Stmnt2: X-Y =$51.84 / 144 (this is nothing but stmnt 1)
In cents -> 5184/144 = 36 cents (i.e. stmnt1) hence NOT SUFF.
(This is one of the tricks in GMAT DS qtns where stmnt 1 says “Half of the glass is full” and stmnt2 says the same but differently like – “Half of the glass is empty”

1&2 no luck as both are same.

Murali.
