Currently: 1 gallon = 17 miles;
After the tune up: 0.8 gallons = 17 miles --> 1 gallon = 17/0.8 = 17*5/4 = 21.25 miles.

Answer: D.

We're told 17 miles per 1 gallon

After the tuneup we can get 17 miles per .8 gallons

So, if 17 miles = .8 gallons
Then 170 miles = 8 gallons

170/8 = 1 gallon

170/8 = 85/4 = 21.25

Choice D

oh man..after a break...even such problems make me think whether I am dumb or not...
i used a chart to solve it:

Rate | Gallons | Distance
17/1 | 1 | 17
17/0.8 | 0.8 | 17

17* 10/8 = 170/8 = 21.25

A certain car can currently travel 17 miles per gallon of gasoline. After a tune up, the car will use 80 percent as much gasoline as it does now. How many miles will the car be able to travel per gallon of gasoline after the tune up?


It says “use 80 percent as much gasoline as it does now.” So i thought it will use 80% more. Please explain how u guys comcluded it is 80%of the gasoline used now
