Let P= # of Pain relievers
Let R= # of Cold remedies
Let C= # of brands that are both
P-C will give the number of pure Pain Relievers
P-C=23-6=17

Official Explanation



This is a sets question. Since the question presents two sets with an interaction of A, B, and both A and B, draw an "A/Not A" \(3×3\) table.

Place the information in the question in the table:

There are 23 pain relievers— this goes in the Total/Pain Relief box.
There are 14 cold remedies— this goes in the Total/Cold box.
Six cold remedies are also pain relievers—this goes in the Cold/Pain Relief box.

Finally, what did the question ask? How many of the pain relievers are not cold remedies, or the Pain Relief/Not Cold box. Put a little question mark there.
The table looks as follows:
