so 3.10 for first 1/5mile and .4* so how many 1/5's in 7 and 4/5 miles? well 5 per 7 and 4 for 4/5 So should be.

3.10 + (.4*5)*7 + .4*4 --> 3.10 + 14+1.6 = 18.70

I am confused because 1/5 of a mile is 1.6.
1/5 of 8 miles is 1.6 and then there are 6.4 miles left?

I don't get it?!

How many 1/5 miles does 8 miles contain?
= 8/(1/5) = 40
Charge for first 1/5 mile = 3.10
Charge for remaining 39 1/5 miles = 39*.4 = 15.6
Total charge = 15.6 + 3.10 = 18.70

Dear Gmatiger

Can you help me to understand why the result must be divided into 0.2?
I am confused!
Thanks,

Thanks,

it is just an unitary method:

The cost per 1/5 (0.2) miles is 0.4 beyond first 1/5 (0.2) miles.
so 0.2 miles costs 0.4, then how much 1 mile costs? 2. how 0.4/0.2 = 2.
so 1 mile costs 2, then 7.8 (=8-0.2) miles cost 7.8x2 = 15.6

so total = 3.1+15.6 = 18.7

fastest way for me...

8 miles * 5 = 40 fifths of a mile
40 * .40 = \$16
\$16 - .40 = 15.60 + 3.10 = 18.70

breaking it up like that lets you do the mental math in your head almost instantly. so much easier IMO.

I was stuck at the same place and took me more than a 20 mins to figure it out that the 1/5 is actually a 0.2 miles NOT 1.6 miles. If it is a 1.6 miles, if you try to add 1.6 five times, you won't be able to get 8miles..

A. 15.60

1/5 miles = 0.2 miles.

The cost of 8 miles long ride would be \$3.10 for the first 0.2 miles plus (8-0.2)/0.2*0.4 = \$3.1 + \$15.6 = \$18.7.

We need to find the number of 0.2 miles in 7.8 miles (\$0.40 for each).

I just find the problem about the 1.6
in this question, it says 1/5 of a mile, not 1/5 mile of a mile
you see, that's why we do not need to use 8 mile divided by 1/5

8-1/5 = 39/5

1/5 + 39/5 = 3.1 + 0.4 * 39 = 18.7 = (D) (Answer)

8 Miles = 40 parts... ( Each mile = 1/5 mile )

Charges for 1st part = \$ 3.10

Charges for 39 reamaining part = 0.40 * 39 = 15.60

So, Total charges for 8 miles ( ie, 40 parts ) is 18.70 ( ie, 3.10 + 15.60 )

We know that for the first 1/5 mile of the 8-mile trip, the taxi company charges \$3.10. For the next 7 4/5 miles, each 1/5 of a mile will cost \$0.40. We need to find out how many 1/5s are in 7 4/5.

Since 7 4/5 = 39/5, there are 39 1/5s in 7 4/5. Therefore, the total cost of the 8-mile trip would be:

\$3.10 + 39(\$0.40)

\$3.10 + \$15.60

\$18.70
