(1) The volume of the container is 1024 cubic inches.

(2) The opening of the container is 16 inches by 16 inches.

Is the OA Correct??? Please explain your answer.

A container is used to pack and ship cube shaped boxes. The container is a rectangular solid with one face completely open. The volume of the cubic boxes is 64 cubic inches. How many boxes can be packed in the container?

We have a rectangular solid to pack cubes, which has the volume of 64 cubic inches, (side=4).

(1) The volume of the container is 1024 cubic inches. The volume of a rectangular solid is not enough to get the dimensions. If the dimensions are 1*1*1024, then you wouldn't fit any box in the tanks but if the dimensions are 4*4*64, then you would fit 16 boxes in the tank. Not sufficient.

(2) The opening of the container is 16 inches by 16 inches. We need the third dimension to answer the question. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) From above the dimensions of the tank are 16*16*4. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

Hi Bunuel,

The statement "The volume of the cubic boxes is 64 cubic inches" seems bit confusing. The volume of a cubic box can be 64 cubic inches and hence knowing volume of retangular container along with opening we can calculate the no. of cubic boxes that can be shipped.

But What if the there are 64 cubes each with volume of 1 cubic inches then we can ship out 64 Cubes boxes but if there is only cubic box of side 4 inch then we can ship out only 1 box. Then the answer becomes E.

The questions seems to indicate that total volume is 64 cubic inches and we need to ship it in a container. Now St 1 we can have 2 types of container (1*1*1024 and 16*16*4) etc
With 2nd statement we can have the opening size and alone is not sufficient.

Combining we get dimensions of rectangular container as 16*16*4-------> Again if the total volume is 64 cubic inches----> The no. of cubic boxes shipped can be 1 or 64 or 1024/64 ------> 16 boxes....

Shouldn't the answer be E then...

I think you misunderstood the question. The question says that the volume of each box is 64 inch^3.

I am wondering here if the fact that the top of the box is open makes any difference. We could get multiple answers irrespective of the dimensions of the box?
